I would suggest that you go North or South. Stay out of Santa Cruz unless you are skilled, have a surf kayak, and/or are adept at martial arts. Surfers will not welcome you and if you are just learning, you are a potential hazard to all surfers in the water no matter what day it is. Territorial and aggressive are the norm here, take my advice and go to a less intense area.

its kind of funny how to many people who dont know better, surfers are all a bunch of laid back, peaceful folks.  Kind of like otters.  Cute and loveable from a distance, mean and nasty up close.

I know you all have been chomping at the bit. Well I survived. I didn't get my ass kicked and car burned. I actaully drove by Cowells this am and it was FAC. So I drove around the point and hit up Davenport. Not a person there. Although two hot surfer chicks showed then bailed when the looked at the water. DAMN!. It too was FAC. Not exactly what I was looking for. But I was there, and I ain't going home dry. So I paddled out. Nothing doing on the the north end. And since there wasn't a soul on the water I went to the south end with the plan to boggie out if a surfer showed. I played in the surf (what there was of it) for a few hours and found out several things.

1. I am at max payload for a yak board. They say 240 and I am 200. I couldn't imagine sitting lower in the water
2. My back up paddle is piece! So heavy! But I guess that's why its my backup
3. Those things turn on a dime. One paddle stroke and you do a 180 degree turn
4. Dead sea lions smell like ASS! One less fur bag to deal with. It was dead on the beach.

great job getting out there even without the waves. atleast you got the feel of a boat that can be a little challenging to keep headed straight when youre bringing alot of paddle power.
I know these cartoons are lame but they are still some nice reminders on how to play by "the rules"
when you dont have the playground to yourself.
