Buy some land, build my house with my own 2 hands, live cheap cause Im used to it and give at least half of it away to folks that need it. 5 mil is too a bit much for one person imo. Greed is one of the main reasons we're in this mess in the first place. But, of course, to each his own...

I always do wonder what motivates the super rich to keep getting richer.  Seems the consensus on this board is to simply do more of what we love to do.

Group IQ is inversely proportional to the size of the group.

Then I would buy property in the fishiest locations on earth.

Paddle one of these? http://sfbay.craigslist.org/nby/boa/942597323.html

Wow, it's a work of art.  But at $95,000 bucks you'd be afraid of paddling it.  I guess if you had 5 mil to throw around you wouldn't worry too much.

You're frigging kidding???!!!  Now even with 5 mil I wouldn't go near it.  Can you imagine, a million dollar kayak?  It's a strange world.

No kidding, it's not like redwood strip boats are all that hard to make...  Similar looking strip canoes go for about $2500, my dad's built a couple.

Unfortunately, given 5 million, you'd have to pay about 2.5-3mil in taxes.  I guess I'd pay off my house and invest the rest (diversely but aggressively since I'm young).  I'd keep my job though.  It is stressful (notice I'm sometimes a bit snippy?) but it also brings a sense of accomplishment I don't think I could get in retirement.

I would however go on more ambitious vacations and maybe buy some less-ghetto gear...

OK, change the premise: 5 mill after taxes.

That's only like $100 to $20k depending on if you go the Hugh Grant or Eliot Spitzer route. ;)
