What if 5 million bucks came your way?  What would you do with it?

Me, I'd buy the nicest ocean going 70 - 80 ft sailing rig, set it up with kayak racks on one side, surfboard racks on the other, complete dive station (with compressor) on the stern, and a complete tackle shop in the bow.  I'd take ocean navigation classes, then pack up my family and head for the south seas.

Oh, and I'd tell my boss where to go.

Buy a house for Mom - complete with servants - and make her live the rest of her life like a Queen  :smt045

...the spare change will go to an upgraded "man-van" by Sports Mobile...which will carry me, my mountain bike, kayak, dive gear and my stand-up-paddle board and travel along the coast till I get tired of it  :smt002

...oh...and give my boss my two week notice...cuz he's a cool cat :smt004 :smt001

I think it would be cool to set up places that underprivileged kids from all walks of life could come and fish and get schooled in marine biology, conservation, fishing tactics and on hands fishing experience. Wouldn't that be cool? A month per child. There are so many kids out there who are in such desperate straights it ain't funny. In fact with all the money we have between us here in this club, do you think that we could do this? A project to make useful time of our resources this winter?I wouldn't know where or how to start but I would help. Anyone?

Well, I could slap the 5 mil in a super safe treasury ladder yielding 3%, giving me an annual income of 150K just to wake up and breath :smt007

but that is way too uptight.  Big ol mothership from which to kayakfish the world!

Oh, and I'd tell my boss where to go.

Damn nice of you to invite him on your trip!  Thats not what you meant? :smt003

1. Quit my job.
2. Buy a 1 acre piece of rural property within 1 hour of the ocean in Oregon or Washington.
3. Build a small 2 bedroom house with a large detached garage/kayak storage area/rod building workshop.
4. Invest at least 2 million to provide funds for the remainder of my years.
5. Travel to tropical locations to camp and kayak fish at least 3 times a year.
6. Buy a man van similar to the one Mooch posted so that my wife and I could live out of it as we travel the US and Mexico.

Did I win? Are you going to give me $5 million now?  :smt044

I would take a deep breath.  Put all but 50K into the bank for at least 6 months.  That way I wouldn't be making any impulsive purchases.

With the 50K I would take a decent vacation (about 5K), spend about 25K on anything I wanted (Beer & Gear),  and use the other 20K to pay off my daughter's student loans for her.

Then I would probably set it up to give me a couple hundred K per year forever.

Kinda sad that it used to be "a million bucks" that would trigger thoughts of perpetual bliss...  $5 mill is hardly a guarantee of work-free luxury for the rest of my Fat-Cat American days, but it'd be a great start!   :smt003

I'd max out on fun stuff like Disneyland (we just got back from 3 days of park-hopping over T-day  :smt007) for a few weeks, then I'd try to tap into the feeling I've had this morning.  I've been out emptying the old water out of the hot tub - recycling it watering all the patio, porch and yard plants that are way too dry for November - and I've been beaming with a grin that is of course based on the family fun and adventure we had there, but it's also a super-inspired grin of appreciation for this beautiful landscape I live in - most of all though, it's in appreciation of the community I am part of.  I was saddened to drive through the slummy areas around LAX to pickup and dropoff our rental car.  The porn shops, barred windows and doors, and down-and-out - if not downright fearful or mad - faces made me sooooooo glad I don't live close to that kind of madness.

When I'd used the money to max my Disney-factor and tap into this inspired mode, then I'd know what to do with the rest of the cash.  It would need to further my goal of staying in a community where I feel good about raising my kids and contributing to the good vibes that are going down.  That's my best long-term goal, and, luckily, kayakfishing fits into it really well too.  Truthfully though, that last fact is mostly only true because of this community.

Thanks, friends, for helping me find out how Disney is supposed to feel.   :smt001

1) Put half into savings.

2) Send the folks on a trip to Maui.

3)  1 million for a house and property of their choice.

4)  Same for me: I could buy a small fixer-upper in the bay area for 300k and then buy property somewhere to put a trailer with the rest.  Maybe Ukiah or Eureka?

Invest most of it securely and build a clubhouse and campground for NCKA folks on my acre near Mendocino.  Admission price/donation: an abalone, a crab, a ling and a six-pack. :smt002
