Yeah you are supposed to tie it directly to the leader for 2 reasons:

1. The swivel can pop open particularly if it is inside of the mouth

2. The swivel changes the action of lure, particularly true on metal jigs and plugs. less so on big plastics which you were using.

The advantages are quicker lure changes and reduced line twist. I use the cross lock design and they are not too costly.

Thanks for the breakdown...Who makes that stuff up?!
Thems' is the ones I use....i bend the clip part open a bit more, to get more pressure on it when it is in the "clipped position".
The only times it's "unclipped" itself, (i think) is when the heavier jigs are used and it slides up the ClipSideShank and then when it gets pulled/jigged in the opposite direction, it must pop-it open?   tying them on ain't that hard and I've done that too.

I keep saying one of these days I'm going to launch at San Gregorio and drift all the way to BH, targetings 'buts.

Hmm..that sounds good...how long you think it will take to drift from Gregorio down to the Bean ? San Gregorio
is about seven miles north, isn't it ? my guess is about 3 to four hour trip. Should be nice to target whatever gets in our way. how is the launch at San Grego ?

during that EXTREME FLATNESS period...you could launch from any of the SURF ZONE beaches...you just have to get that window of no swell....at least punching through surf is easier, when you know you don't have to return through it....if you're shuttling.

My leader terminates in a duolock snap, attached with palomar or uni. if the lure has a split ring, I ignore it and attach the duolock to where the split ring is attached.  a crosslock (or something good like that) would be better than the duolock.

I use a pretty small duolock. hasn't failed so far. but probably will some day.

at the end of the mainline I have a big ball bearing snap swivel, and often, a slido above it for threeway trolling duty.

the leader starts with a surgeons loop which goes into the snap on the ball bearing snap swivel on the mainline.

I have a few leaders pre-tied so I don't have to tie on the ocean.

I double my mainline with a surgeons loop (should use bimini I guess) and tie uni to the ball bearing snap swivel.

this year I also put on a rod-length leader of heavy mono on the mainline (with an albright) and did not bother to retie my mainline to swivel between fishing trips. just did that every three or four trips.

I lost the ball bearing swivel slido setup once. but then I still had a length of mono albrighted to my line. and just tied direct to my next lure in that case.

cap du nord has very few snags tho. we'll see what happens when I head to north county soon.
