Shark-schmark! Way to get out there Brian.
I bring a super-magnum rapala w/me just in case I ever see a shark cruising. Screw paddling away! I'm casting plugs at those bigguns!
Thanks for the great report Brian. Nice blacks. And that google overlay is sweet.

I've said it before...if you are on saltwater here on the Cali coast, you've got a shark somewhere beneath you  :smt002.

Do you always have to ruin everything Sean? :smt002

PK,

You're not the first silly boy to think about going for a sleigh ride behind a shark.
Check out www.boreme.com, there's a video of a dude jumping off a pier into shark infested water with a rod and reel loaded with grandma's Sunday roast, and his surfboard, hooks this monster shark and goe's surfing behind it.

Hilarious, not real, but hilarious just the same.. :smt003

Hey Guys, Thanks for the comments & positive ID on the rockfish. They had some nice fillets and beat the hell out of surf perch.

I thought AbKing would be interested in these photos...

The first picture is looking north from pigeon point and the second picture is looking into the cove (launch site). These pictures were taken about 5 minutes apart.

pigeon point is like a mini pt conception. it is the dividing line in many ways.

mostly we have the nw windswell in the summer and it is like in the pics.

sometimes tho, there is a south swell and stuff south of pigeon pt is worse as a lot of it faces much more south.

as for sharks, risk gets worse later in the summer, now is a good time to fish there but it's good to know the risks.

brian seemed to pick the kelp which is not always the best fishing, but certainly is safest when it comes to sharks, they supposedly don't come swimming through the stalks very often.

I can't help but wonder if sharks like to hang out on the protected side of that dividing line like their freshwater cousins...  Although I suspect rough open water doesn't bother them.

They'll cruise wherever the food is, which is probably both sides.  Kelp always seems sketchy, the deep outside edges or lanes between beds are a good ambush point.
