Here is a report from pigeon point (05-05-08).

Launching in the lee of the light house was very easy. The exposed, northern side of the light house was getting hammered by 9' swell. I had to take pictures of the leeward shore and the exposed shore because the difference was so dramatic. I'll post them or email them if anyone is interested.

I paddled around in whaler's cove until I found a small patch of kelp. I threw out a drift anchor and made many, short drifts through the kelp. I fished from 8 - 11am and caught these two rockfish. I also attached an image of the track from my GPS imported into Google Earth Plus.

These were my first rockfish. Thanks for the help everyone (I was lurking for a while)!

Those are some good size blacks.  Congrats... That's not bad for your first CA rockfish trip, especially in swell conditions.  Your kayak surfing experience is a good thing to have around here.

I'll post them or email them if anyone is interested.

From now on please just say, "Abking will want to see these..."   :smt003  More detail of your adventure is always not only welcome but necessary!

I used to dive at Pigeon Point for abs and enjoyed some great beachcombing there and near there to the south.  Very fond memories...

Great work on the black rockfish, the solo launch in the red triangle, and an excellent report.  Please post more and continue to share your outings with us.

If your are interested in any company on the next outing post it on the hookups or pm me. I'd like to hit that spot this year. Nice work given the conditions.

Pigeon Point is definitely good spot to go out with others given its sharky history.
I always game for a thrill, but you won't catch me out there alone. :shark

Brian, you've got major sac to launch out of PP solo in swell conditions!  Good thick rockies to show for it.  Thanks for the report, sure the first of many.

talk to the folks that work in the lighthouse, they will tell you how last summer they saw GWS breaking the surface nailing seals right about in the middle of the GPS track...

I've said it before...if you are on saltwater here on the Cali coast, you've got a shark somewhere beneath you  :smt002.

Nice report Brian. I too have often thought of launching there, but its been later in the season & I always drove by on my way north. I scoped it out briefly last year, and would be keen to try it.
