Mr. Barton has taken more than $1.4 million in political contributions from the oil industry

I think we need to reinstitute walking the plank....Barton should go right into the gulf.

Thanks Obkook,

That reduces the BP ( my Blood Pressure ) a bit....

I have not wanted to look on the Bayou Kayakfishing website for a while, but took a look this afternoon,  very sad, but interesting in their perspective of their relationship with BP and other oil companies. Being there are over 3000 oil rigs out there, many work for the oil companies and are in there, with sleeves rolled up, working to get this stopped as well as others who work for the state trying to decide what, when and where to close to fishing.

They have rage towards the cost cutting screw ups that brought this on, but they are rational about it,  I guess what else can ya be...

then I found this link on one of their threads....

in 1979 " The Ixtoc "  drilling platform exploded and dumped 30,000 plus barrels of oil a day in 200' of water....

For 9 months.........

Get this, same methods used today to stop it, none worked, 9 relief drill wells is what stopped it,

Again...

200 fow,  and took 9 months.....   oh boy.........  :smt009

So that everyone knows. We are dealing with high volatile organic compounds out here. I read a few posts about oil stain lines on kayaks. I would urge you guys to google v.o.c.'s before your next trip out. I am sure there has been mention of this on the news. I had to be fitted for a respirator before coming to work. There is some bad gris gris in this spill guys so be aware.
It's like I told my guys out here that didn't want to mask up, they didn't use to think aesbestos was harmful. I don't mean to sound so dire here, just be aware. You may be fishing in some potentially bad stuff.

Nonsense is better than BS, but I have to point out that we already screwed the planet to sustain life as we know, key words here Scott- as we know. Worldwide extinctions have been happening exponentially for 10 plus years now up and down the chain, sure there will always be life, but I think most of it will be extinct or real close within a few of our lifetimes no matter what we do, we can slow it down do some degree, but it cant be stopped, entropy happens with or without us, but we speeded it up by a few million years with our personal desire to make and stash huge piles of money.
Also that power I was implying about us having to wipe out life included our nukes, pollution and other crap, it would take a lot more than an oil spill.
Get some fishing while you can! Ben

Ben,

While scientists say that extinctions have risen exponentially in the past "X" years, the list of actual extinct species has barely changed. Mathematical models != reality. So, why don't you tell me how many species went extinct in the past 10 years, versus 1900-1910? Want to bet that there weren't more extinctions a century ago, pre-EPA, pre-ESA?

As for personal changes in "life as I know it", nothing's really changed on the macro scale. About the only thing I've noticed, outside of the Salmon dropping drastically from its highs in 2005, is that there are far fewer California Newts around than there used to be. Of course, I'm not a North Coast Steelhead angler.

What has disappeared from your life in the past 30 years? What has disappeared from Prince William Sound in the past 30 years? What has disappeared from the Gulf of Mexico since Ixtoc I in 1979?

Again, I feel like we need to be careful, but I'm not going to be Chicken Little. That's just silly.

Yep. I'm saying that in 5-10 years, nobody's going to pay much attention to results of this spill. And I don't stand to make a single penny off of the oil companies.  PWS and Ixtoc I are my reasons for stating this. Do you have any facts to back up your claims?

Scott

One year later, from NOAA:http://www.noaanews.noaa.gov/stories2011/20110419_gulfreopening.html

NOAA sampled seafood in the area between November 11 and November 14, 2010, March 12 and March 16, 2011, and March 28 and April 1, 2011, for potentially affected finfish, including tuna, swordfish, and escolar.

Sensory tests of 86 finfish samples found no detectable oil or dispersant odors or flavors. Chemical tests of 112 finfish samples found that oil-related compounds and dispersants were well below the levels of concern. All test results are publicly available.

In the wake of the spill, NOAA and the FDA developed a chemical test to detect the presence of dispersants in fish, oysters, crabs and shrimp.

The level of concern for dispersants is 100 parts per million for finfish and 500 parts per million for shrimp. The test can reliably detect Dioctyl sodium sulfosuccinate (DOSS) at levels of 2000 times below the lowest level of concern.

The results of chemical testing showed that 99 percent of samples contained no detectable dispersant residues, and the few samples that did contain dispersant residues showed levels more than 1000 times lower than FDA levels of concern.

No oil or sheen has been documented in the area that was reopened Tuesday since August 4. At its peak, the area of the Gulf that was closed to fishing was 88,522 square miles, or 37 percent of federal waters in the Gulf of Mexico

The previously scheduled end of the world, as related to fishing in the Gulf of Mexico, has been cancelled. And my prediction still has 4-9 more years to go before coming due.

I'd have to say I was a bit put off by Scott's view on this at first...

but when I looked at the Ixtoc spill,  I guess he was right....  this stuff happens and somehow the world goes on...

I still think it stinks, but I guess I like to drive too...

I'm sure they could be doing a better job, the oil companies, it's all about $$$$ and not giving back or making things more eco or cost effective..

I just got back from France, not to go to far off topic, but, they drive smaller cars, turbo diesel, manual 5 speed,

manufactures,, Ford, Toyota, etc... I had seen models of Ford I've never seen before, something called a " Kuga "

look like a Rave4, turbo diesel, 5 speed and kinda cool, at nearly 50mpg....  uh

WTF?    The europeans demand a better product, and they get it..,

here, you can get a turbo diesel VW golf, station wagon, audi q4, but it will cost ya plenty,

pretty cheap over there and much more competition with Puegot and other brands offering the turbo diesel...

we've got to demand better choices to reduce our demand....

Not that I disagree with your view Danglin, but from what I know the gas prices have been a big factor in driving the need for fuel efficient vehicles from the EU.

http://money.cnn.com/pf/features/lists/global_gasprices/

Now if the US drivers were actually paying 5-6$ per gallon, I doubt there would be so many SUV's and sports cars on the road.

I've been back to Louisiana 3 or 4 times since the spill and have managed to eat fresh Gulf seafood each time I was there.

Louisiana has done a great job promoting their seafood since the spill and letting folks know that it is safe to eat (at least that was my impression when I was down there and I heard similar opinions from my family members).

Inshore sport fishing seems to have recovered nicely as well...one of my buddies who guides down there told me "The fish are at where I usually find them and they are biting!".  :smt003

We at Shore Thing Fishing Charters have big plans for 2011 and wanted to keep you in the loop for things to come. As always, we at Shore Thing hope this email finds you and yours doing well. 2010 is behind us and we are only looking forward with big expectations for the coming year. Shore Thing Fishing Charters has grown every year since 2002 and this year will be no exception.

All of our guides have been spending the last few weeks running charters, and on off days, scouting new areas for the upcoming season. Early reports of stellar red fishing have gotten everyone excited for spring. The trout have already begun showing up with the warming water. Judging from early reports, lets just say the guides are going to have some long afternoons at the cleaning tables. The big question between the guides, is who will get the first triple tail of the 2011 season? Flounder, black drum, white trout, sheepshead, jack crevelle and mackerel are already here as well, and everyone is really enjoying the nice warm weather!

The biggest news for Shore Thing Charters in 2011 has to be the house on Cat Island. Shore Thing will now be offering all inclusive guided fishing trips out of a pristine 4,000 square foot house on the island. The house has everything you and your party would ever need to enjoy a remote fishing get a way like no other. 10 beds, 3 full baths, flat screen TV 2 bars, full kitchen, 2 BBQ grills, 3 generators, well water and much much more. This one of a kind experience will put you foot steps away from wade fishing on some of the most pristine white sand beaches the Mississippi Barrier Islands have to offer. Of course, we will be bringing the bay boats, as well as our kayaks. We will be guiding trips on Cat island, to other barrier islands and most certainly the LA Marsh. Anglers will be able to fish from sun up, into the night on these trips. Known for some of the best night time floundering in the northern gulf, we will be guiding night time excursions, seconds from the dock as well. Meals, guided trips, tackle, kayaks, boats will all be included on the most unique fishing experience you will ever go on.

He has concerns (like many people do) about the longer term impacts, but for right now he is still taking families out to explore the swamp and catch fish.

If you end up in that part of the country, go eat some seafood, go out fishing with a local charter company, and do what you can to support the people who are still struggling to put this disaster behind them!

 :smt006

Sincerely,

Jim

Who was it that once said "There are lies, damned lies and then there are statistics"?
I'm not ready to sound the all clear. I dont trust the castrated corporate lap dogs ie the EPA and mainstream media.
Much of the incriminating data regarding the spill is being kept secret by both sides pending looming court battles.
I found this article helpful

Guys (and gals)

Yes, I'm a bit of an online *hole. I blame it on hanging out on a particular international forum where those who are not thick skinned are chewed up for breakfast. I apologize to my NorCal kayak angling siblings for my gruff demeanor.

But people, please, do the math. Look at the volume of the Gulf of Mexico, in gallons. Then look at what was output by Deepwater Horizon. You'll become familiar with fractions of a part per billion.

Who cares that the EPA bases their allowable exposure level on a 176 lb man, eating 4 shrimp per week? Because the levels found, so far, are 1000 times lower than allowable. That means a 17.6 lb child could eat 400 shrimp a week. Or a 176 lb man/woman could eat 4000 shrimp a week.  And that's ONE year later. Wanna bet that levels in 5-10 years are even lower?

I recommend vigilance in testing, for at least 2-5 more years. Perhaps longer if levels do not continuously decline.

Please remember that the NRDC has an agenda (just as BP does) and it has a lot to do with raising revenue... I take what they say, what the NOAA, the EPA, BP, FEMA, CIA, and the FBI say with huge spoonfuls of salt... And yet I still believe that the Deepwater Horizon blowout was a media extravaganza, and highly overplayed.

Scott

I'm not so good with words or math, but the pun was making fun of the idea that everything is ok because the oil is dispersed and diluted.

A drop of green paint in a bucket of white will taint it forever, no matter how much more white paint you add.  The green is still there.  Paint your house with it, most people would not notice the green.  But it's there.
