I'm travelling to Santa Barbara for work next week - should I bring the kayak and go fishing?  I know rockfish is closed, are there other species in the ocean down there? Maybe CA halibut?

Or, just bring a surf rod and fish from the beach/jetty/pier? I've never fished there, so don't really know what's down there.

Thanks for any tips/advice!
- Kevin

I'd recommend the surf fishing if the beaches/water have cleared up a bit.

you can try checking with Hook Line and Sinker tackle shop.
They're pretty much the only game in town besides the wharf.
Surf casting has been productive at Goleta beach park. North of town, I've had success parking at the Bacara lot, then walking the open stretch down past the golf course. There's a lot of tar usually though.

Thanks for the tips! Had a little snafu with the plan - my boss said Santa Barbara, but the email definitely said San Bernardino. Not much fishing for me on this trip, haha. But it's only for a day or two, and my wife and I are turning this into a night away from the kids, so it's all good!

There is bridge just north of SB that you can hike to, to get under it.  It's a good spot for perch.

Sometimes it is crowded on the weekend.

Yeah, I got the ole bait n switch on this one. Trip was cool though, my wife came with me, I did my meeting, and we went to Disneyland the next day, and went to Pismo the next day.

Was crazy, driving hwy 1 through Santa Barbara,  nav pointed us up the mountain road vice the coast. So we head out of town, and within 10 minutes there was 2" of snow on the ground (road too) and cars sliding all over. Nope, haha. Turned around and took 1 the rest of the way to Pismo. Later heard that CalTrans shut down that road that day.
