Please educate me on trawling in the Monterey Bay.  I picked up some oysters and was surprised to see rockfish and Petrale Sole at H&H caught using trawling methods.

Not sure what the regulations are in that area, or which vessel do it, but generally, trawling is done with a large cone shaped net dragged behind a fishing vessel, with two large "doors" on either side of the net to hold it open.  Some bottom trawl nets have gear that keeps the net a certain distance above the bottom to keep it from snagging on rocks and reefs, but generally the process is the same.

This method is used a lot, all over the world.  In the Bering Sea, the fishing vessels are very large, and haul in 300' long nets with thousands of pounds of fish in each haul, then pump the fish directly to processing vessels.  These vessels clean and filet the fish, flash freeze, and package for deep freezing.  Sometimes they also bread and flash fry for products like fish patties and fish sticks.  McDonald's Filet O' Fish is prepared in this method, from pollock caught in the Bering Sea.  Most of the product from the processor vessels is ready for market.

Are you planning on kayak trawling?

According to the InterWeb, "Trawlers vary in size from small open boats with as little as 30 hp (22 kW) engines to ..." If a 30 hp engine can do it, why not a kayaker paddling/pedaling?
I don't like stuff that sucks.

Let me clarify, I already know what trawling is.  Monterey bay leads in restricting that method.  Wondering where in the bay itÂ’s allowed so that itÂ’s destructive nature is mitigated.  Recently trawling methods have been even further restricted in MB.

Edit:  who is/what boats are employing this method?  Should I not care?  Is their method refined to a level of acceptability?  Always thought hook and line was the least destructive and keeps by-catch numbers way down.

I'm sure you're looking for guesses, so let me guess that whether you can trawl at all, and how and where, might depend on whether you're doing it commercially or for recreation.   And another guess: keyword "nets".
Some days, with the number of snags I got, it seemed I was trawling, not trolling.
