Hit Tomales with Shimmy in an attempt to break his devil fish curse.  We made bait and hit the usual spots.  After several hours we had no halibut but we both got great sleigh rides from an assortment of sharks and rays that devoured our fancy home-tied leaders.

Shimmy started drifting alternate areas and got the right kind of hookup within minutes.  I see him get the gaff, I see the hali come out of the water, I see the hali go nuts and go back into the water... :smt010

We waypoint the spot and I soon get one on too.  I get mine in the boat, but it too gets back out of the boat.  Fortunately mine was well-hooked and in minutes he's back on the gaff.

Then Shimmy gets another fish on in the same spot, and its almost to the boat and gone again... :smt010 :smt010 :smt010  Terrible luck!! (unless your Freddie  :smt003) .

We had a few more take-down's but nothin stuck and then the WIND started.  Not positive, but I can't see Shimmy not going back at least one more time for revenge!

That's awsome boyz!!! Even if they got away, you found em! When it comes to halibut, I usually opt for the net, then when they go balistic, their in the bag... to easy to flip off the gaff, and they will probably die after if they get away.

The weather was COLD and foggy, with drizzle all day.  Wind was OK until about 2 pm, and then it was Tomales.

Sounds like a perfect day... not too hot. Gives me something to think about for Friday...

Yesterday was probably the most demoralizing day I've had on the water all year. First off my Sabiki management was terrible I snagged everything including my pinky which had to be pulled out with pliers,my vest,my jacket, paddle leash, and more. :smt010 sabiki rod on order)
I brought my net last time but decided the gaff and lipper hadn't failed me yet so I left the net at home, because of the wind issues and tackle management.(too much crap)
When I hooked the Hali it felt pretty heavy and I brought him up slow and easy, when he was right next to me I went for a head shot but only got skin. Then he fell of the gaff but I wasn't too worried because he looked like he was hooked good, but he popped the line  :smt013(30#!). When I was stowing gear later I saw my treble trap hook buried in the bait tube line at my side handle. The fish was hung to the boat with 5" of line and it snapped when he flopped off the gaff. :smt011(fish story and I'm sticking to it)  I never saw the second fish, he picked up  my last bait which was a big Walleye perch. After he picked it up he started to run off the the side off the drift and I guess I didn't let him eat long enough and didn't get a good hook set. He made another short run and the hook pulled. :smt012 At least we found a concentration of fish and Sean brought home fishsticks. I hope to hit it again soon!
Heres a pic of Sean with his butt, again! :smt044

Mark,
With the impending rockfish closure you and I should spend some considerable time trying to get the halibut/Tomales skunk off so we can get some of Sean's mojo!!!!
