Howzit NCKA,

I'm new here and new with kayak fishing.  I have been fly fishing for a little over a year and a half now and have primarily been targeting stripers from shore on the coast and in the carquinez strait on kayak.  I've recently been dabbling with a more traditional gear approach as the salmon have been moving through Benicia.  Hope to get to know you all and contribute! Thanks for having me.

welcome!

would be fun to target stripers - in the straight, you do that anchored? or drifting?

No luck but I definitely don’t have the right gear for trolling yet. Tide was going out too. Not sure if that is a negative before they hit the river systems. But it was nice out!

I do a bit of both. If the current is ripping and I’m by some of the larger structure near first street I’ll try to anchor and get some swinging action while I strip but most of my luck has been when I am drifting and stripping in streamers. I’ve also been quite successful and have caught several while I’m drifting slowly trying to untangle or fix something and my fly is dead drifting under the kayak somewhere lol

Glad you got out!  Thanks for the report.  For trolling that area all you need is a 3 way or a slider with weight and tow that spinner or lure of choice.  Make sure you use trolling swivels or your gonna end up with a mess of line twist.  When I fish Benicia I like to anchor "ish" and cast a spinner then move on but trolling is effective for sure but there isn't a mess of salmon from the reports but always a chance.  The tide today was a little feisty...get dem fishees... :smt006
