I like Trevalas but they are very unreliable. I've gone through 2 rods where the guides break off.

Which Trevalas were they? I had problems with the green trevalas (Old trevala S and Trevala PX). The guides weren’t planted securely. My regular Trevala however has been bulletproof. so far 10+ years now if I’m not mistaken.

Shimano Trevala Butterfly Jigging Casting Rod - TV66M And a light one. The guides broke within 6 months-1 year of having them. What happened for both is guy get snagged and try to get the line out and the line got wrapped around the guides and cause it to break off. 1 of them I exchanged for a phoenix already the other one I got to work on what I am going to do with.

+1 they have been bullet proof for me.  First rod I bought for saltwater, around 14 years ago, but it was lost overboard some time back.  They are good workhorses in my opinion.

Honestly, that sounds like a pretty reasonable way for a guide to get broken off.  Don't give up on these rods, they are pretty bulletproof for the most part.

I also have been running the TVC70ML for over ten years, can't seem to break it.
