I'm planning on getting a couple hoop nets to drop off my kayak this year for crab season and I was wondering if there are strong opinions on the 32in vs. 36in size. I could see how the smaller size would be easier to transport on the yak, but the 36 might catch more. Any thoughts and advice would be greatly appreciated.

I have a bunch of 32 inch hoops and they work great. I think the 36 inch would be difficult to handle and I doubt you would get any more crabs in a 36 inch hoop. Also, at times I get so many undersized crabs in there that it is really hard it into get into the yak. If that happened with a 36 inch it would be really hard to manage. I do add some rebar to the hoops to prevent them from moving. I use two 20" pieces of 5/8 bent to match the larger hoop and just tie it on. You can paint them to prevent rust.

I would recommend the Promar 32" ambush hoops as well. Last year there was a mad dash for the 32" ambush hoops due to regulations changing.  I got a couple 36" collapsible but they were too big for my kayak set up and were wobbly, so I returned them.  Might be doable with a different yak/setup.
I had the same experience as JP regarding smalls filling up the net, had 30-40 in a pull that was a challenge on the shoulders as well as trying to not tip over.
   Good Luck!

i have 3 32 inch and 2 36 inch. They both work about the same if you have a smaller kayak go with the 32 inch for sure. The 36 inch is not too bad if you have a larger kayak

Highly recommend the Scotty Crab Pot Puller. Makes pulling in pots much much easier and prevents the rope from rubbing on your yak! I run the 32" easy to handle then the 36". I like to soak for about 30 min then reset. Prevents them overloading the trap and crawling out

For anyone who DOES want a 36" Promar, I have one for sale. To get one new from Walmart would cost about $113 with tax.

https://www.walmart.com/ip/Promar-Ambush-XL-36-Hoop-Net/644707992

Mine can be had for $80. PM me.

Pickup in SF or San Mateo only.

Thanks!

Bass Pro/Cabela's has the best price on the 32's right now. $59.99. We just ordered a few more this week. Free shipping too. West marine has em for the same price but not sure about shipping. Otherwise they seem pretty price gouged on other sites/retailers.

Also recommend the scotty puller. One of the many things you didn't know you needed until you try it!

do you mount this to the slide track, or use the base in the picture and screw the base to your hull?

The photo shows the base mount that would screw into your hull. It looks like the exact same mount that comes with the Scotty lake troller.

I learned you can also buy a Scott adaptor that will adapt that mount to your gear track. It was about $25 on amazon as i recall. The advantage is that you don't need to drill holes in your hull. The disadvantage is that it might put a lot of pressure on your gear track.

I got some a couple of weeks ago on west marine for $54.99. Free shipping too. Better get them now or else during crab season it's going to be a price gouging fest again.

Hi Brian

SAI Armor Plate 200 might work well for Scotty Crab Pot Puller and downrigger.
I would not go crabbing or lobstering w/o Scotty Puller.

That forward plate looks awesome too for your FF, could probably attached T bolt to that piece as well pretty securely. Thanks for the idea!

Yes, I ordered that one (SAI Minnow Mount) for my FF mount.  Just getting ready to set up my new Outback.
