Spent weekend camping and kayak fishing Refugio (just north of Santa Barbara).
Caught a 24" halibut last night. Went out at about 830am this morning on my hobie revo 13'. Turned and headed up the coast just outside kelp line.

After about 20 minutes of trolling a 5" white pearl swimbait on a 1.5oz wsb gliding jig head. Reeled up, turned around, casted behind me and trolled heading back the way I started.

I was about 1/4 mile offshore of the point when my rod bent over bit. I waited just a second as drag played out a bit.

Picked up the rod, and went full bendo, few handshakes, slack, and massive bend right as a 10-12ft great white shark jacked what I think was a undersized white seabass I just hooked. It came 90% out of the water and rolled onto it's back 50ft behind me and proceeded to take off with my lure and fish.

After a brief second or to ripping drag I grabbed the line and broke off. Booked it back into the beach, fastest I have covered ground on my yak. Head was on a swivel but did not see the taxman again.

Easily the craziest fishing experience I have ever had.

Cool story!  I am glad he was only on a white meat diet.

It was a pretty crazy experience for sure. No shark shield, and glad I didnt have fish hanging off a stringer.

What a cool and terrifying experience!  I haven't seen a white shark from my kayak yet, but I have seen a few from a boat - always eerie.

Congrats on the hali - good eatin' there!

Curious about other peoples GWS encounters

Has anyone here ever have an encounter with a GWS that has breached out of the water (in CA)? or attacked their catch while reeling in from Kayak?

I was telling a buddy of mine that is pretty into sharks how it hit my fish and got airborne. He was convinced that they dont really do that out here in CA, only a South Africa thing? I have the image burned into my mind hahah, while it was no "Air Jaws", the majority of its body was clear out of water and halfway rolled upside down while splashing back down.

Very cool!  Love that spot Refugio and El Cap as well.  Never fished them yet though. I have launched at GAviota but didn't have enough time to head north for wsb.  Just a quick morning go-out two lings while on my way to SD.  Welcome to the club man.  Both NCKA and GW proximity survivor's Club.

Tax collectors were busy off the coast this weekend.  Humboldt county surfer bitten and reports of taking fish in TC and Santa Barbara as well!
