Hi All

My name is Frank and I'm new to this site.  Looking to get started in offshore kayak fishing.  I have done some pier and surf fishing but not ocean kayak fishing.  Any advice on best way to get started with kayak fishing would be greatly appreciated.  I live on SF peninsula close to Pacifica so looking to start around here.  I ran into some kayak fishermen at Rockaway beach and it looked like a blast to me...they mentioned this site.

Right now, I'm researching equipment and methods on YouTube and various site.  I have fishing rods, reels, and most tackle needed.  I've looked into renting kayaks but haven't found any fishing kayaks, (besides the advertised kayak fishing guides services).  Not sure if renting is better or even possible.  So, I'm looking into buying a used one.

Looking forward to meeting some of you and getting out on the water.

Cheers

Welcome. I believe that you need 10 posts before you can see the used kayaks for sale here. Some great deals show up from time to time.

Thanks everyone for the welcomes and advice. :smt006

I have been reading the safety guide and am shopping for items I am missing.

PDF is the VHF radio are the big $ ones I still need, (aside from the kayak itself obviously).

Does anyone know the requirements for having flares and type I should get?

Good news is that I did find a used Old Town PDL 106 that someone is selling in my price range.  Hoping to get that deal locked down by the end of the week.

Welcome to NCKA Frank!  :smt006 A PDF wont do you much good, I suggest trying a life jacket  :smt044  Flares are not required, but I do carry them in my PFD pocket and in a waterproof ditch bag.  Orion Skyblazer Aerial handheld ones are my favorite, self contained (no gun) waterproof, floating, and fit in a pocket. Before buying flares though, I'd buy a good whistle, such as a Scotty whistle.  Something you wont see on Youtube is a lot of safety advice, so glad you came here as well.

Not sure 10’6” is ocean length…I could be wrong though.  12-15ft is a more common platform length for da big blue…welcome anyhoo and see ya’ on da wattah’ :smt006

There’s often kayaks on fb marketplace too that come with extras. Mine came with a vest, flag, fish finder, etc
