I got out around 8 a.m.

No wind. tiny swell. no fog. woo-hoo!

1 legal ling, and 3 underlings including one of those red kelp colored ones. (and yes, it was in the kelp). never held one of those before.

also kept 2 blues, 2 blacks and a gopher. released a few gophers and some small blacks.

I ran into he-uge schools of brown/red jellyfish. must be spawning or something. it was actually a little creepy when they got really thick.  The fishing action was decent when I didn't have a carpet of jellies right under me.

Tried to put down a jointed rebel and bounce for halibut, in what looked like flat terrain, but got hung up on some just grown kelp (got my lure back). Then tried casting out my swimbaits and retrieve along the bottom.  No 'buts. a couple rockfish tho. I think it would have been a decent day to try hard for halibut down there or at 4-mile/5-mile. I'm too lazy to be that focused on halibut.

Later,
J

A few weeks ago we had an explosion of jellies up on the Sonoma coast. Tons of the mini man'o wars. Kept me from diving for abs. Everywhere it was calm, was carpeted with em. Didn't want one of those things stinging me in the face. Got stung in the face years ago while surfing and it felt like a hot poker on my face for a few hours. Nasty!!!

Adam, I do like company, like one or two, and a crowd once in a while, just not all the time.
Be glad to fish with you anytime you want to fish the linda-mar to moss-landing stretch I
call my 'home range'.

I should have brought my camera on the yak. I figured they would be like my last trip there,
but the jellies were unexpected. I know you would have taken some great underwater ones
of the swarm.

can't beat the bean, in shallow, for a cabbie. that or lindamar maybe.

one place I bet would work for a cabbie is fitzgerald marine park north of mavericks.

there is a semi-secret launch back there just north of the moss beach distillery.

never fished it. probably will be closed in the next round of closures.

Is that the spot that Surfers try to tell me about when the swell is gigantic in the winter?
..."you can see the swell coming in, but you can't see it actually break"

I will be hitting the bean every chance (swell and wind) I get for that damn BIG-HEADED rockfish.
Thanks for the xtra-intel John.....much needed.

adam, every cabbie I ever caught was in shallow, really shallow and close to shore.  Tends to also be in thick kelp.  half of them came when I paddled to shore and just dropped the rig down while stowing gear for the landing.

of course if I need one, I probably couldnt catch one if my life depended on it :smt011

Adam, I always seem to catch them on smallish rootbeer scampis. I guess they think they are crabs.

I have caught one on a white bucktail (no trailer!), 2 or 3 on whole squid, and 3 or 4 on fish shaped metal.  often, I catch one, I catch more in the same place.  yes on shallow, like 30 feet, but the last two came in 60 feet, right next to where craig pulled up that fat 'but. Not much rhyme or reason for me. I guess it's been the approach of just go fishing as much as you can. Adam, you got that last part down, so it's just a matter of time for you.
