I am going out of Santa Cruz Small Boat Harbor on either Sunday 9/4 or Monday 9/5 ... flexible on date if I can join others.

Would plan to launch at 6.30 and fish for Halibut and take any RockFish that liked the look of my bait

Let me know if we can get together

I fished the west side of SC today and was planning to go again on Monday, but it was the worst fishing day I've had all year. I caught a few baitfish on a sakbiki and had a couple of those baitfish got chewed on (I suspect small lingcod, not halibut). I only actually landed one rockfish (a modest-sized black) all day. Talking to boaters, it seemed slow for those who fished that same general area. The fish survey people and otolith lady were at the dock, and they said it was slow too, at least up to the time I came in (about noonish).

I think I might try Monterey on Monday...

Second-hand info, but this morning, a boater at the harbor told me that he'd caught 50 halibut in one day in 15-20 fow off of New Brighton. That's the second time I'd heard something similar about NB. That area is known as "shark park" for good reason, so instead of kayaking, I was thinking of trying surf casting...

Join NWM at New Brighton.  Best spot for possible halibut.  I take my dog there often while I surfcast.  Day-use parking lot end of beach has been very weedy.  Walk down to the bathrooms, or further to the houses on the beach.  there's a gap between house rows.  Right around tere is usually pretty good fishing.

Hey Bushy, any suggested lures for halibut surf casting?

LC110, white, light swimbait, kastmaster small, dropshot rig with white fluke is the standard.

I worked 20-70 FSW between NB and the cement ship on Friday with live bait and only got one small shaker. It was a grind.

Ditto here as well.  Was having some fun with catching rockfish and lings drifting a swimbait, but otherwise didn't get much of a hit on the troll at all. Lost yet another dodger spreader weight setup. MBK Sounds fun for a change, so will be there dark and early tomorrow.
