I am having the following problesm on my 2 Standard Horizons radios:

HX 210 - incoming transmissions are almost inaudible faint (yes, volume is all the way up)

HX40 - I can hear incoming transmission, but no one can hear my transmissions

Anyone had similar issues and able to offer troubleshooting tips?

(fortunately, I have a third radio, but its huge and I'd love better performance from these other units that Ive owned less than 2 years each)

also- if you have a rec for a handheld radio less than $125 please feel free to share.

thanks!

Do you rinse them after use?  It sounds like buildup in the mic and speaker ports.

I typically rinse them, yes. You know how to clean those ports? Is it something I can do with a paperclip or something like that?

My HX870 is terribly low on volume if it gets wet. As soon as it's dry, it's back to working well. Very frustrating; I don't have a solution.

Yeah, I have the same issue with the HX300 each time it gets wet.

Is it something I can do with a paperclip or something like that?

If you typically rinse them, then I think it might not be the ports being clogged.

If it's salt buildup clocking the mic or speaker a good rinse or a good dunk might dissolve the buildup.  Shake it and dry it thoroughly, hopefully works again?  Some of the VHF's have a feature to shake the mic/speaker if dunked as well.

For the one that isn't transmitting - does it have a "monitor" or "watch" mode?  That setting would be used to prevent accidental transmissions.

For the one that has low reception - is the antenna securely attached? Many handheld radios have removable antennas, not sure if yours does, but something to check.

Salt-X might help if it's from salt build-up..
