I am trying to organize a trout tounament at New Melones Res. in Angels Camp. Fishing is always stellar in the winter time at this lake. There are nice camping facilities on site for those coming from out of town. The lake is a larger man made resivoir with multiple launch locations and wonderful access. The weather can be low 70's during the day to low 40's at night if conditions are right. Of course this would be winter time so anything goes. Looking at doing a one or two day tourny. Open to largest fish or stringer weight. Looking at a $10 - $15 entry fee with a 70/20/10 payout. Each entrant will get a lottery ticket for a rod combo that I will throw in ( thinking shakesphere catera and 4600 abu).

That fish wasn't actually caught at Melones although every year some browns that large are caught. That was a mac caught at Silver lake on hwy 88. Melones fish will typically range from 2lbs to 6lbs. They are fat on shad. My largest fish out of Melones was just over 8lbs...released. That was 4 years ago.

I'll be there whenever the event is in the blink of an eye! And if the tourney doesn't materialize, may I join you and scallen? I'm a freshwater kinda girl (grandma!).

Mid to late January would probably be the most opportune time for me. But, no matter when it is held, if I can get the time I'll be there. I've been hoping that there would be some fresh water get-togethers or tournaments this year.  :smt003

February isn't such a bad time either.  There is that week between the president's bdays that most schools generally get a winter break.  That might permit some of the young uns to make it, and permit families to attend as a family getaway.

In 2008, that falls between ~ 2.11 and 2.18.

This type of fishing is usually best in the A.M. when the trout are on the surface. But adding a couple of split shot to your needlefish or switching over to a croc will get you down in to the action range again.

Looking forward to the finalized date for this so that I can plan for it. Maybe a carpool from the 707?

I know, I know.   The fish was caught late in the day.

I went toangels camp in the summer and deemed it Devils camp because it was so fricken hot i couldn't even think right....but winter is a whole different subject...i voted Jan. because it is closest to fall/ less chance of stormy rainey weather.
