Cut the sabiki's down to two hooks.  I usually lose half the fish I bring up before I can get them in the baitwell anyway.

Yep, those work and store the sabiki's inside the rod, fairly convenient. I wouldn't use it for jigging squid as it's just too stiff and you often fish deep and need the rod to load up and you know they are on your hooks.  I have one, but I stopped using it because it seems simpler to me to just stick to the KISS principal so I just bring two rods and dedicate one for sabiki when I am catching bait, and then I take it off when I want to use it for something else like RF.  Cutting the sabiki in half is a good way to make it easier to handle on a kayak, and you get two for one! For storage I wrap it around my hand with the weight in my palm and then wrap it in a paper towel, then put in a zip-lock/baggie.  Usually get 3+ uses out of one.

I also have a dedicated Saki stick like you show on Amazon. It's AWESOME....hardly ever a tangle, sakis last much longer, etc.

ADVICE, buy the 8 foot, with a 7 you may have to shorten pre bought sakis so it all fits inside. They run best with a bait caster reel since it's a tight line angle going into the rod. Light braid like 10lb also helps the system work more smoothly.

Yeah two rods may sound like KISS but if you do any sabiki then having the dedicated rod will actually be more simple and productive since you don't have to make change overs and you can immediately get out if bait around....you'll use it much more with much less frustration

Well as you can see I'm a fan, honestly not sure why not more popular, hey to each his own.

I have been using Eat May Tackle 7' sabiki rod for the last three years.  As the previous comment stated, it can't store 6-hook sabiki without trimming the end.  I have been happy with 4-hook sabiki.  For kayak use, I think 6-hooks are too many and difficult to manage.  "Also I highly recommend pinching the barbs and making barbless before use and carrying a dehooker would help to remove hooks"  I have been using Hayabusa S-005AE-4 Hage-Kawa Sabiki Rig and very successful catching live baits at Santa Cruz, HMB, Bolinas, TB....

If I would buy one today, I think I would try Okuma CZ-C-732SBK Cortez SBK Conventional Sabiki Rod based on Okuma quality.

I have been thinking about a sabiki rod for a long time. This thread got me thinking and doing some research. I have a love hate relationship with sabiki's. More hate because they seem to snag my clothing an unacceptable number of times when i use them.  :smt005

I haven't bought one just yet because they just seem to be overpriced for me. I found this diy online. May give it a shot.

Since I’m in the Sabiki optimization craze right now, I’ll chime in.
First, I’ve been crashing the barbs on my Sabiki, and on the occasion that they snag, they do come out easier. However, I’ve also gotten better at holding the rod the right way and managing the line more deliberately, so I’m thinking about not crashing the barbs anymore since I feel I loose bait this way.
Secondly, I’ve chosen the Ugly Stik Dock Runner (tiny, strong, flexible 3 ft rod) for my Sabiki since I can stow it in the Revo hull for surf launch/landing, with my Lexa LC reel (allows dropping to the right depth). Works great, but only for 4 hook Sabiki. The nice thing about a short rod like that is that when you reel in, and move over the kayak, it doesn’t touch any other gear, and you have more control over the distance to hooks and bait, much more than with, say, a 7ft rod.
I’ve used to take my 7ft Trevala for Sabiki, and I like the Dock Runner better. But there are many other Sabiki setups that work.

I have a dedicated rod that I do not use too often (probably, just need to get out more often. I use a smaller spinning reel so that I could cast away from me with better ease; however, the line doe not come out that easy... any suggestions for reels with these dedicated rods?

With Sabiki my understanding is that you simply let it drop. You don’t cast it. 2 or 3oz weight.
But maybe I’m wrong. Any thoughts?

I have been using 2 oz weight and letting it drop straight.

Yes, just let it drop straight down.

If you want to cast a sabiki, I recommend a fly rod and no weight. That way, you can also catch all kinds of things above the water (birds, the back of your head, etc.). Be sure to turn on your GoPro when using this technique…

I use an old line counter conventional reel I had laying around. With the line counter I can drop right down to the bait ball.
