Hi All,
I just got a PA 12 360 and wanted to know if this is enough for me to get started fishing for rockcod and lingcods along the San Mateo coastline.

Lowrance Hook2 with 1.5" hobie ball mount
2 hobie rod holders with hobie ball mount
Standard Horizon HX40
fish stringer
knife
pliers

I have all the standard safety gear like life vest, daytime flares, and whistle.
Would appreciate all the help on things that I should need.
Thanks,
Mike

A compass and hopefully you have reception on your phone for navigation just in case you are offshore and the fog rolls in unexpectedly. Not familiar with hook2 if it  has navi ?

Btw, that is a great yak !

The hook 2 has a gps plotter and yes in the process of getting a compass so I don't get lost in the thick fog.

I'll be practicing tomorrow with my kayak doing beach launches.  I hope I don't flip in the surf but I will have no equipment to damage or lose.  Just getting wet will be fun.

-assumable you already have immersion gear wetsuit/drysuit
-Lip grippers for easy releases and not getting your hands cut by toothy fish
-scissors to cut line, gills, everything.
-net for a big fish, but also very helpful for if you are trying to grab something floating in the water.
-something to measure your fish with to make sure you are legal.
-fish id help if you are unfamiliar with what you can and can’t keep

I’m glad to hear you are planning to practice beach launches.

The biggest thing that I haven’t seen mentioned is practicing self rescue. Be sure that you have a bilge pump and practice using it. Just this morning I assisted (in a minor way) with a rescue of someone on a Hobie that started leaking, lost stability, flipped, and was not able to self rescue.

I don’t know all the details, but it seemed like this person had too much stuff on their kayak, was not in tune with their boat enough to realize it had started taking on water, and then was not comfortable enough in the water to pump the kayak out and get back on.

I would definitely bring a net or gaff for the bigger lings. Also a stringer is cool for a few fish but trying to drag a limit of rockfish/lingcod behind your kayak is not fun, if you can strap a small cooler or can get a cheap fish bag that’s the way to go when rockfishing. Looking forward to some reports! Good luck out there

Mike,
One of the hardest things to learn is getting  back on the kayak after flipping. So that would be good to find a way to practice it. Seen yakers at HMB not able to get back on after flipping.
I did my 1st practice at a friend's swimming pool.
I flipped my AI twice at Bolinas. Got back on after 2 flips and then went fishing. Thanks to "gabekap" who help me gather some of my stuff and the surfers as well.
Thus the need to prepare all your stuff for the flip:
1. Fishing poles and other gears secured/leased.
2. Paddle leased.
3. Lease all the other stuff you don't want to lose.
Hopefully don't happen but having the experience is a good plus & ego booster.
Hope that helps.

Thanks for all the tips.

ThreemoneyJ- I have everything that you mentioned. With the rockfish identification, If I don't know what type of rockfish it is, I take a picture and release it.

KPD- I have the bilge pump, 20 gallons a minute per the instruction.

Todd W. I have a net but don't intend to use a gaff at this time. I have a big fish bag which is tied in the Bow.

Superd270- yes I have everything leashed that I want to keep.

Went out today at Oyster Point, very windy.  Learned a little about the PA 360 and how it function. What an awesome machine.

My favorite fishing spots in San Mateo are Bean Hollow and Pigeon Pt. You will need help moving your PA 12 to the launch spots. Beach wheels come in real handy. Bring your buddies along to help you carry your yak or make a new friends fast to help you.
