I know there have to be halibut out there and I intend on nailing one. This trip might cost me a girlfriend so the fishing has to be good. right? Launch about 7ish.

Well...here's how I look at it Brian...

GAF (Girlfriend Approval Factor) is a much weaker form of currency than WAF (Wife Approval Factor)...

Whether or not you need to earn GAF is a personal choice.  No girlfriend... no need for GAF.   (I'd take a good day of halibut  of salmon fishing any day over some of the girlfriends I once had.)

Once you have a ring on her finger, you are then required, for the rest of your days, to earn WAF if you want to have a fishing life.  Not that I'm complaining... I think it's a good system... it is what it is.

Also... the act of actually bringing home some halibut or salmon from a successful day of fishing can actually earn you significant WAF (return on investment).

Lastly, there seems to be a WAF surcharge for getting skunked, where it costs more WAF than you originally thought it was going to cost when you went fishing in the first place.

Maybe this is what investors called a low probability high yield situation, or show we just call it gambling? I know what I must do, NAIL ME A BIG OLE ONE.           Then I get to use my gaff and get lots of gaf when I get home. :smt075   ======> :smt058

I'm married, and I get virtually instant WAF for fishing.  Why, because she is always at dog shows!!

Her hobby costs WAY more than my hobby (D'oh) and that is saying a lot knowing what we all do about fishing.

Here she is with MACH (master agility champion) 3 Gracie

Here's another way of looking at this.  It's all the more reason to have more girlfriends.  The more you have, the more you can burn to go fishing.  Or you can subscribe to the Joel theory of fishing and just not have any girlfriends.  You can go fishing all you like hassle-free.  Sorry Joel!!!

I don't know what advice to give you married folk ...

Now, standard disclaimer applies, I would NEVER subscribe to such thinking, in the odd case my one and only girlfriend reads this.   :smt004  BTW, she supports my fishing addiction just fine!

:smt043   You guys crack me up.  I'm still trying to figure out how to get an exact measurement on how many GAF points I have at any given time.

If you're doing it right, you are always running slightly negative in the GAF points.  Mostly because they always seem to be dwindling even when you're not doing anything to use them up.  Moral of the story ... use them before you lose them!!!

Well this turned out to be the trip that be happening. My old pontiac finally let me down. My alternator went out and boiled my battery. This would just go over great...."honey, i know you are still mad about me leaving to go fishing, but I had to spend another 300 to fix my car just so I could go..."

but let me tell you guys about the last time my car broke down. It broke down in santa cruz, during a really good halibut bite. it "took" me almost a week to get the parts.

They're like wal-mart gift cards and depreciate after a few months.

My wife loves fish, so she's quick to let me go fishing.  She does get annoyed if I come home empty handed though.  That's why I like fishing for rockfish - it's reliable.

Buying the house has my WAF in the stratosphere at the moment, so I'm authorized for a few overnight trips to fort ross or whatnot.

Beware - if your girlfriends find out about each other both GAF accounts go to zero instantly...

this is hilarious!  I've found that the WAF  function is actually far more complicated in my case (probably in all cases) and so modelling WAF needs for a given trip is difficult.  Here is an example of the WAF function:

W(d, t, Kf, t_d) = (d^2-100) + t + (-Kf)+ (t_d^2-16t_d+64)

Where:
d = distance in miles to the location
t = time gone in hours
Kf = Kill factor= lbs of fish brought home
t_d = time of departure (measured in hours from midnight). Note on t_d, leaving the night before implies negative hours

Clearly, minimizing the distance travelled, and leaving after she has woken up and had coffee you can greatly reduce the WAF required for the trip.  Luckily, there are many options within the optimal distances that can maximize Kf.

"Zero" is greater than "negative".  :smt043

W(d, t, Kf, t_d) = (d^2-100) + t + (-Kf)+ ((12-|t_d|)^2-16(12-|t_d|)+64)

Steve I made a few corrections to your equation to reflect the value of time for clearly.

Well  I figured I was in the doghouse from my stunt, but this morning I woke up to find a cake!  :smt003  Apparently she felt bad about me not getting to fish and her being so mean about it.

:smt043  Allen - you're killing me!!! Sure, I can go "fishing" anytime I want without the AFOAK (Approval Factor of Any Kind) but the thing is, I'm not exactly doing any harm to the salmon population right now - might as well get a girlfriend - anyone want to "hook" me up?......I'm really a nice guy........sometimes  :smt002
