Use case is storing salmon, halibut, or lingcod (if I can catch them that is!). My current idea is to buy a large size "Feelfree" fish cooler and attach it to the bow of my Hobie Outback https://www.feelfreeus.com/products/feelfree-camo-cooler-bag?variant=31999314788491
Quote
Length 35.4"
Width 16.75"
Height 7"
Weight 3.4 lbs
Volume 67.9 Liters
Unfortunately it looks like they don't ship to California, so I'd need to spend a bit extra to get it from my local shop: https://www.calkayak.com/feel-free-fish-bag-large.html?id=67198501 (not a huge issue), but I was curious before purchasing, does anyone have any experience with this cooler? or recommendations for coolers with a similar price point (<$120)?  :smt001

A bit above what you are looking for price wise, but the standard that most people use is a reliable bag. It’s 20x36. $168 on Amazon. https://reliablefishing.com/collections/kayak-bags/products/20-x-36-insulated-kayak-bag

Hi Brad,
I was able to get one for my old town sportsman.... It fits well and seems to keep everthing cold.
I think there is an outlet that does ship to Cal but I cannot remember how I found it..... I think when ordering it had a option at the bottom for cal folks?

Not sure that was about 2 months ago.  For the price it is pretty sweet and has a pretty heavy duty removable liner.

Unfortunately it looks like they don't ship to California, so I'd need to spend a bit extra to get it from my local shop ...

I went to the website you provided a link to, put the fish cooler bag thingy in the cart, proceeded to checkout, entered my Calif zipcode, got this message:

Sorry, we do not ship to this destination at this time. Due to issues with damage, and high shipping costs, we are unable to ship boats to certain Western states. We are working to remedy this issue, and will begin servicing those states in the near future. However, we are shipping accessories to Western states, please visit www.feelfree-us-west.myshopify.com for purchasing.

You might want to contact the folks at that business to see about getting the thing shipped to you in CA.

I strap a hard-sided cooler in the rear cargo areas of my Revolution and my 12' Pro Angler.  Hard-sided coolers hold a lot of ice and a lot of fish, it's easy to dump fish into them, if you get one with good insulation they do a good job of keeping ice and fish cold, it's easy to get access to them on the water by turning sideways in your seat, and they're easy to clean out.  I have several different sizes of hard-sided coolers, and use the size which is appropriate for the size and number of fish which I hope to catch.   A large hard-sided cooler catches more wind than a low-profile soft-sided cooler, but a hard-sided cooler in the rear cargo area of a kayak will have a lot less impact on the stability and trim of a kayak than a soft-sided cooler strapped on top of the front hatch of a kayak.  And it's inconvenient to slide your butt forward in the cockpit of a kayak to slide fish into a soft-sided cooler which is strapped on top of the kayak's front hatch.  You may need to pull out your mirage drive in order to be able to slide forward far enough to get fish into a soft-sided cooler strapped on top of the kayak's front hatch.

The cooler in the pictures is a large one which I use when fishing for lake trout, when I can reasonably hope to catch large numbers of fish, and can reasonably hope to catch fish well over 30" long.  When fishing for kokanee, I use a lot smaller cooler.

Here's a suggestion for keeping your fish cold in a hard-sided cooler or a top-loading soft-sided cooler: put at least half of your ice in a mesh back, and after to dump a fish in the cooler, pick up the back and plop it down on top of the fish. The mesh bags I use are shown in the last picture.

Thanks for all the tips everyone!  I'll have to think a bit about going for a hard or soft cooler, both seem to have their pros and cons

Ah I see, yes that makes sense.  I think I might try a mix of both strategies and lay a soft cooler bag like this one https://a.co/d/2IMu4J9 on the back of my kayak

Honestly I use an older Costco cooler bag, the white ones, newer ones are black. Under $10

I tend to skunk when I bring my fish cooler on the yak and catch when I leave it in the car...just saying.

That said, I do like my Elkton Outdoors cooler bag.

I got a reliable bag and returned it since it was bulky and required cleaning, and overall it complicates many things. Then I learned from dangerous cliff to use a burlap sac, and I love it. Here’s why:
Packs small. Very lightweight. Super cheap. Simple (soak it in ocean water and lay it over the fish to cool). No cleanup needed (just leave it outside to dry).

Check out this fish cooler:smt004

Perfect!

Actually, I too am a fan of a hard-sided cooler. The only drawback is that if you catch something really big (say, a 46" halibut) you might have to decide between the cooler and the fish...
Are you pondering what I’m pondering?

I used to use burlap gunny sacks and still do on occasion but now I have one of those large Ice mule backpacks and its working great for the salt. I have a hard cooler pack I throw in there and can fit an entire rockfish limit +2 lings in there usually. fits salmon and halibut nicely as well. Bit of a pain having it in the back when it gets heavy, will get a side cramp trying to roll/close it up lol.

I sometimes clip a little plastic golf counter to it to keep track of my fishies too but the last two have taken a swim... I just try really hard to remember how many I put in there since its such a pain to count fish on the water.
