Being completely ignorant in the ways of sonar units I need some help. A friend just gave me a Lowrance X-49. I used the NCKA search engine and found nothing. Has anyone had any exp. with this product? or other lowrance products before I start drilling holes into my new "project".

No experience but I don't think it would be much different from any other FF install. I looks like it is design to be hard mounted and the head does not detach easily, is that right? If so that might be a bit of a PITA.

FYI here is a link to the owners manual - http://www.lowrance.com/Manuals/Files/x29_x39_x49_0105-85.pdf

 Thanks Bill,
your right on the mounting. The mounting bracket is wide and it will require a costume platform and ram ball system to keep it off the deck. I see that its discountinued as well, makes me wonder. I do like its simplicity and size but this may end up being donated to a friend who has yet to open the third eye.

I know free is free but for around $99 you can get the new cheap Humminbird that is a lot more compact and I think higherrez as well.

I had a lowrance on my old prowler and it worked fine, don't remember the model number but it was one of their smaller units.  Lowrance is basically the higher end version of Eagle products, you can probably find reviews for comparable eagle products, most likely gonna be a cuda version.  The only downside was that I went with the AA battery power source and it sucked em dry after a couple hours, not sure if it was the sonar units fault or the battery's being a crappy power source.  I would just go with the lowrance over buying another unit.  What kind of yak are you mounting it to?
