Hey all,

New member, long-time paddler. Bought my Trident Angler 13 8-10 years ago when I was still living up in northern mendo, where I'm originally from. Back then, It was mostly a platform to get to the bigger abalone, place some crab traps on the way out, and look sexy on my lumber rack.

I moved east for a few years and just got back to the west. I'm living in the east bay now and no more abalone, so I'm looking to turn that dive platform into a fishing boat.

I would love to hear about easy rockfish day trips from the east bay, suggestions on how to rig simple and reliable setups to jig or troll, and guidance on where to look for general resources. I'm comfortable with all the basics and safety stuff. I have a few good boat rods in the back of the garage, wetsuits etc. but I haven't done any bottom or other salt water fishing in years and I'm eager to get going again.

Thanks for the community.

Mike

Welcome back to Cali! T13 is a sweet yak, good for lots of types of fishing. Figure out what you want to target, and then we can flood you with advice to catch them. Watch the weather and look for hookups, or post one up!

Thanks guys! Looking forward to the flood.

I'd like to work my way up to salmon fishing but I figure I'll start easy by jigging for rockfish, including but not necessarily focused on ling and cabezon. I guess I should also learn to drift for halibut.

I picked up saltwater fly fishing while I was back east but have never really mastered it. I'd probably enjoy fly casting for perch from the boat but I don't really understand the fly setup for rockfish, so I'd probably be using my two conventional rods for everything but perch: one spinning and one baitcaster.

Welcome to the Madness, Mike.  If you want a full day training session I specialize in getting people up to speed on trolling different bait presentations for rockfish, lingcod, salmon and halibut.  Shelter Cove is the training grounds.

Good luck and enjoy.   :smt001

Welcome.

Try using the search function on the upper right. I did a quick search " fly fishing". Tons of info. Part ways down was one on lingcod fly fishing.

Thanks guys!

Eric, Shelter Cove is one of my favorite places along the north coast. I don't get up there as often as I'd like, but if I can find the time I'll certainly reach out for a training session.
