A perspective on the event from a new Yak fisherman at my first Derby.

Kayak fishing generally appears to me as a very solitary form of sport fishing.  On a 6 pack you have 5 buddies, on a party boat … dozens.  On Saturday I felt that comradery for the first time kayak fishing.  And although it was a competition, so many people helped me as a newbie both on land and on the salt.

I was not the first to the parking lot, but it took me so long to get ready in the pitch black, that I was just about the last to the beach.  When I got to the waters edge I could not believe how many yaks were lined up next to the still water with the backdrop of a ghostly gray fog which for me is Monterey Bay at its finest.  I’ve never seen more than 5 fishing kayaks on the water at the same time, and to see what must have been more than 40 was amazing.

I didn’t catch the biggest fish, or anywhere close … but the bite was white hot and I caught a full limit of Rock Fish, 2 Ling Cod and an Ocean Whitefish … which is more than I caught on my previous 3 trips combined.  Enough to say, I had a blast!

I was worried about the beach launch and return, having only ever launched from a harbor before.  I didn’t want to have a “yard-sale” event on the way in or out.  The folks at Monterey Bay Kayaks gave me a quick lesson and tips on the way out.  And it was a breeze. I will definitely be back next year. And not just because I won a trip for 2 from J&M Sport Fishing in the raffle!

I confirm all of the above, this tournament was my second time out on a kayak. I met several people in the parking lot, a couple more afterwards during the awards ceremony, and never felt alone on the water.  I can't say enough about how great this group is.
