I'm a soft bait maker. I make swim baits and such. I'm going to try my hand at hunting some bay area halibut. Does anyone have any experience with soft baits and what color works best with halibut?  TIA

you know, I've been thinking about that - I know folks use artificial (Lucky Craft) in place of herring/anchovy with some luck, but seems soft baits, on a 4 or larger head would work as well.

"DC" on this forum (not much in recent years) was the Kayak Butt King out of SC for several years, and mostly cast soft baits in about 40 FOW with a lot of success.  He posted a number of videos, showing his let it sink, rest, reel a few turns let it sink, rest, etc. return.  I think he used dark baits, but I recall he said that he didn't think color mattered much.

Thanks, everyone. I have a 5" full bodied paddle tail swim bait mold. I was going to imitate herring and troll it.

Yes, DC was (and probably still is) the Butt King! I seem to recall that "root beer" was his go-to color...

I always say there are only two colors in swimbaits, light and dark.
I start with one, then switch to the other if I'm not getting bit.
My go-to for halis is light, especially if it is bright out.
the darker the water/weather, the darker the swimbait.
I think the contrast is what helps them home in on the lure.

good luck on your crafting!

I've heard similar before, in fact one guide suggests only white - colors catch fisherman, not fish :)

Hell yeah DC rocked the SC butts every time.  His technique of honing in on halibut and tossing swimbaits worked really well for him.

Most common color that I’ve seen for Bay Area is white or chartreuse or both.  That’s what you’ll see shore guys use all over.

I’ve caught plenty just drifting around bouncing them off the bottom.  Or just casting around.

I love using white Berkley Gulp grubs. I'm convinced they work every bit as well as dead chovies/herring.

I rig them on a three way and hook them exactly like bait with a single hook + treble and a lead ball.
