Fishing scissors and Lanocote

Good video.  I am thinking the same thing, cleaning fish on the kayak.  I am sold on the the scissors now.  Thanks!

I've tried that a couple of times, but it takes time from fishing! Plus I always seem to end up with a lapful of fish guts, which in my opinion is not a good thing.

It's a distraction imo 
I had my rod in the water with a live bait in 28' fow and a sea lion snatched it from the bottom. There went my trevala lexa combo as it dived my rod was no where to be found. Even with pool noodle it never resurfaced.
This all happened while I was cleaning my fish two weeks ago at OP.

For fish with size limits, I won't cut tails off.

I find that amusingly wise...fish beyond limit size I cut the tail, not off, to bleed from both ends...

An unrelated question... What do you use to scale the fish? The only thing I've got seems kind of large to carry on my kayak...

I go as far as scale, guts, and those pesky pointy fins only. A fork works great for scales on a kayak.

One can make a custom sized scaler using wood or plastic and bottle caps

This is what they use on a lot of charter boats. Metal horse brush

This works great at home with gloves so you dont scrape off some knuckles

That looks like a Japanese scaler called urokotori. My brother-in-law gave me one, but I rarely keep rockfish, and when I do, I skin them, so I haven't gotten around to using it yet. Looks pretty slick though.

I tried several different types and ended with Brass Fish Scaler.  It is easy and safe to use on the kayak.

I use Big Norm’s Magic fish scaler. I’ve bought different ones in the past and this one is now the only one I use. It doesn’t rust and does a good job at keeping scales from flying all over the place when in use. I like how it’s yellow so it’s hard to lose at the cleaning station.

Yeah, that brass fish scaler (Japanese made) is awesome. I bought one to a fishing buddy
I fill up my kitchen sink about 6” deep, then put fish in after I cut their tails, spikes, etc. , and scale them inside the water. I collect the scales before draining the water, but it’s ok if some end up drained.
This year I also started to sometimes keep the fish in the fridge overnight after a trip if I’m tired and process them the next day. Helps to break up the cleanup!
