So it's sort of hard to admit this, but I feel like I know next to nothing about fish habits and how to specifically target them at specific times of the years.  I watch a lot of YouTube videos these days and people always have some reason for why they are targeting specific areas of lakes at certain times, and what they are using.  I'm wondering what resources I can use to learn more about these behaviors or patterns and get a better understanding of how to target specific fish.  Is there a good book on basics of say freshwater fish that can give a decent explanation of the behavior and patterns of fish?

Check out Peter Moyle's "Inland Fishes of California". It's 20 years old, but it is an excellent resource for every freshwater fish you can imagine that lives in CA. Everything from migration patterns to spawning behavior to fin rays, it's all in this book. I still use it to this day, and I've had it for over a decade.

This is an authoritative and broad survey on the fishes inhabiting California's inland waters. Professionals and amateurs will find valuable information on the ecology of California's six major drainages and the 132 fish species, both native and exotic, that call them home. Population distributions, life histories, social behavior, and feeding habits are all meticulously examined.
