If I am hooping for crab, can I get away with using a bait pin and a rockfish carcass (probably together with a Scotty bait jar), or do I need to use a more dog-proof bait container?

There’s 2-3 resident sea lions than know how to get in cages and break even snares.  Come prepared.

Thanks, that's exactly what I wanted to know.

Also, don't use salmon the sea lions will do anything to get it.

Use chicken for bait.

Also be aware of where they are when you drop.  I had one that took off with my trap when it was about halfway to the bottom, the rope was on the opposite side of the kayak and went whizzing by my neck.  Could've gone for a swim...or worse.

+1 I sometimes crab off a dock in Oregon where there are always sea lions. I never have a problem as long as I use chicken for bait. One time I took some underwater video and I saw see a sea lion come over and sniff my bait and move on.

Thanks for the info on not using salmon (or bottom fish?) carcasses for bait. I have always used chicken/turkey with a procure soaked sponge (in a bait jar) as my bait and have done well. However I had considered the fish carcasses for future. Thanks again for the advice.

Just to be clear, in most places in the ocean (e.g. Pacifica, HMB) and Tomales Bay I use fish carcasses when I have them and do not have problems with sea lions. So unless you are going where there are a lot of sea lions (some bays, maybe Doran from what other posters say) fish carcasses will be fine. I hate to waste so I like the idea of using fish carcasses for bait. I have not noticed a difference between fish carcasses and chicken as far as catching crabs.

I do not waste my fish carcasses, I eat them.

Salmon with teriyaki on the BBQ.

Rockfish in soup.

I've had my Danielson folding traps all mangled up at Doran using herrings. Going to just stick with chicken from now.

I always use a Promar ridged bait bag like the one I'm attaching.  Zip tied to my hoops, they are unable to steal my bait and tend to leave it alone.  But when I used to just zip-tie carcasses to the bottom, they got stolen every time  :smt005

I used the bag above with clip and the sea lion opened the clip and took the bag and bait!

I was told that my mangled trap problem was due to using salmon heads. The person that warned me was using rockfish carcasses. I switched to chicken and haven't had a problem.
