Figure I'd get this up here so I'd build it.  Accountability stuff...

PVC, hardware cloth, lid...I have no idea where to start but I'll look at some pics and I do wonder if any of y'all have done this...maybe as large as a larger garbage can... :smt006

Possibly in conjunction w/ some wire mesh on the inside or something to deter them harbor seals? Them sea lions tear right through the cast nets to get at a couple shiners at times

This plastic 55g drum idea seems like it can work if you are generous with your openings. they have screw tops already too https://www.bdoutdoors.com/forums/threads/bait-receiver-pen.687473/

Yes, still on the table.  Fish cannot swim so well in the narrower cylindrical shapes.  They have to last up to a week ideally… :smt006

Yes sir!  Fishemotion’s link has a good option, hope this endeavor doesn’t cost as much as buying one…

I’ve seen 2 issues to be the most problematic, thought I’d share if not already known.
1.)When drilling holes or creating perforations on a 55 gal drum, sharp plastic edges on the inside causes damage to the fish. These are caused by drill bits or saw blades and should be minimized or smoothed.
2.)Seals and Sea Lions love to harass bait in these pens, especially by blowing bubbles underneath. Folks I’ve seen most successful avoid holes in the bottom of the pen.
Hope this helps someone

Yes, I can imagine the sea lions taunting my little friends to the death.  Maybe I’ll put no holes in the bottom, and if I drill in a different system, it might be super tedious to file off all jagged edges, thank you… :smt006

Maybe a cheapo soldering iron and melting the slots in could be a way around the sharps.  deffo an outside job lol

Why not just run an orbital with 80/100 grit after the holes are drilled.  Smooth it out.

Drill the barrel from the inside out - the little sharp edges will be on the outside then.

Cheers,
Brad
