Greetings,

My son and I plan to head down to San Diego for Spring break (first full week of April).   We like to try out their charters (not kayak) down there for both inshore/local as well as offshore trips.  Any recommendation will be greatly appreciated.

Lots of boats to choose from. I would narrow down the species you want to chase and then choose a boat from there. It may be a bit early for the warmer water stuff. Rockfish just opened down there so a lot of boats may be doing those sort of trips. You can check out socalfishreports and then fish reports - boat counts to get an idea of what boats are chasing what.

The other question is do you have a passport? That opens up some more options for you. A full day trip on the San Diego out of seaforth to the Coronado islands is about $240 and April looks wide open.

Yes we both have passports so we will likely give the Coronado islands a shot.

I would check out The San Diego out of Seaforth Landing.

I really like the San Diego.   Normally fish it offshore in September.   Most offshore trips, no passport required, but Coronados, required.  Seaforth has free parking, and is close to Mission beach.   If you have kayaks, Mission Bay is great sand bass fishing.   Some halibut.   You can rent skiffs at Seaforth Marina.   Recommend Luigi’s at the Beach in Mission Beach.  near the roller coaster, Belmont park.   Nice beaches there.  I think you can rent kayaks at Fastlane on mission bay.

Greetings,

It looks like early April in San Diego, even for a full-day trip, targeted species are rockfish with an occasional sheephead.  What sort of tackle should we bring?  Similar to ones we use up here, like shrimp flies and jigs?  Thanks in advance

Re gear, it will most likely be fishing live bait on dropper loops.

Also, I would keep an eye on the fish counts to see which boats are catching before finalizing a reservation, but the San Diego is a good boat.

Definitely do the Coronados, what used to be called a 3/4 day in is now, I think called a full day.

Half day isn't worth anything, unless there is a good Calico bite on.
