So I just got my Fisheasy 245 Portable...it has a nice little suction mount for the transducer that's designed to go on the transom of a boat. Will the transducer work if I mount it to the top of the inside of the yak? It will have 10" or so of air-space below it before the bottom of the yak and then water. I've made a lame Photoshop cross-section image to demonstrate what I mean...

Would it work better to have the transducer mount to the bottom? The way the suction cup is designed, it's easier to mount to the top...
May the fish be mighty and the seas be meek...

Better to contact the hull. That way it won't get a funky signal from bouncing off the hull, then back to the transducer. On a good day, hopefully there will be no fish between your FF and the hull! :smt044

It has to touch the water, be glued to the bottom, or have water or vaseline between the transducer and hull bottom (pool noodle style).

What is "pool noodle style" exactly? Can the transducer mount on top of the pool noodle? See pic below...

You cut a hole in a piece of noodle or foam that the transducer fits tightly into.
Glue the foam to the bottom of kayak.
Fill with water, vaseline,or gel - then insert transducer, making sure there are no bubbles.
Power up and test on the water.

Air bubbles or pockets stop or wreck the signal.
