Just purchased a Kayak trailer last Sunday. Did a little research yesterday and it seems that the general rule of thumb is that I don't need a separate policy for the trailer because it is covered by the policy of the vehicle doing the towing.
Do I need trailer insurance?
Thought I'd ask here first because I know if I called and asked my insurance company, they would say "Of course you do, come on In. That will be $200 a month!"

Your thoughts and experiences would be appreciated.  Thanks.

the liability coverage you already have for your tow vehicle will protect you in the event you're liable for injuries or damages while pulling the trailer.

This. If you are worried, call your insurance to confirm that your liability coverage will also cover any trailer behind the tow vehicle.

And you home owner policy may cover theft from the trailer.   I would call your agent.   My homeowners policy covered my 14’ Valco and 15 HP Mariner.

This.

Would it also cover damage to the kayak itself, or just the trailer?
Are you pondering what I’m pondering?

I'm no expert but I would think it depends on your policy. Liability only would cover damage/injury to other people and property. Damage to your trailer and kayak would fall under comprehensive coverage.

Exactly this^^^^ liability only covers damage “you” cause to someone else’s property…. Liability only your out “all” your property damage, gotta have full coverage to get paid for your boat and trailer if your at fault…. If someone else is at fault there policy covers your property and if there uninsured you better have coverage for that…. Insurance companies are such scam artists IMHO, just saying.

I look at insurance as a necessary evil. People have bicycles that cost more than a kayak and trail, and they don’t insure their bicycle. It doesn’t necessarily make sense to insure a bicycle, and it doesn’t make sense to insure a kayak and/or trailer. But there is liability. Bicycles are not likely to generate the damage/liability a kayak and trail can.

This is what my ins guy told me a few years back: if I cause a problem, I am liable. In our litigious society, an injured party will acquire a lawyer. The first thing a lawyer will do is an internet search for info on their target ... me. That determines the claim amount. The example he gave me was for the most common claim in the Bay Area - someone professionally employed with a 4-year degree: if they hit someone riding a bicycle and there are no major injuries, it is presumed automatically a $200k claim/lawsuit. This is the pay-out all auto ins co plan for in the SF Bay Area. He also said any auto insurance company will automatically throw up to $50k onto the table to get the party started. Apparently, a lot of people (think: homeless) take the $50k and never get a lawyer – the ins co just saved $150k. If there are serious injuries, the number goes up.

Maybe he told me about that example to get me to buy more liability ins than I would have otherwise? :smt102 IDK, but it got me thinking about what I had to lose, and how to shield it. So now I think of liability as being not only about what the damage is, it is also about the value of the person at fault.

i have a little 5x8 enclosed work trailer with tools etc. I am covered for liability while towing and hooked to vehicle. I got a separate policy that covers the trailer itself including theft and it's contents. It is not that much and covers I believe actual ($5000) replacement on trailer and $4000 on the tools. Maybe $20 month I think.

I'm trying to get back to the group here. Been so busy with work and have been racing again. Speaking of racing.  I really need to get on track insurance for the Camaro. Anything can happen and very well could. It is covered for theft/fire off track, but not on track. Also the trailer I haul it in is covered for comprehensive too. I really need to insure the contents off that also. Just keep putting that off.
