Anybody tried this? Does taking a kayak out even make sense, or just get some waders? Going to be in the area and thought I'd give it a try...

Yeah take a kayak.   Put in at Healdsburg take out at Wohler bridge or put in at johnson beach and take out Cassinies.   Lots of great beaches that no one else fishes. Pull over and fish and the slow sections throws lures in holes and under cur brush.

I wouldn't mess with the kayak those drifts mentioned above are sunup to sundown and you have to shuttle. If you want to kayak, I would launch at Monte Rio and paddle up then drift back.
I don't know if the mouth is open or not the longer it is closed the further up you want to fish. Not a lot of fish in the system right now and the most reports I have heard are from the middle reaches Healdsburg to Guerneville.  Some access with ok fly water are Willow Creek, Cassini Campground, Monte Rio, Vacation Beach, Johnsons, Steelhead Beach, Wholer Bridge, Dry Creek access off Foreman Rd (packed most of the fish go up Dry Creek), Memorial Beach, Geyserville Bridge. The river is low and clear right now dropping every day. You can call King's in Guerneville and see if the mouth is open if so Cassini is a great spot and close to Jenner, if not it will be crowded but Dry Creek most of the action is right below the creek, but you can walk a mile or two down the gravel road and fish your way back.
Group IQ is inversely proportional to the size of the group.

A Steelhead always knows where he is going, but a Man seldom does.
