Is there any physical inspection process for boats being registered or could you just say I built this boat yesterday and go from there?  :smt044

For me there was no physical inspection of my Hobie.  I had to provide a completed DMV boat registration form 101, Manufacture statement of origin with hard signature, Sales receipt to prove I already paid state sales tax, and pay the fees.  Because I didn't have the hard signature on the MSO form, I had to make a second trip to DMV.  I bought my kayak in 2020, but they did not ask me to pay back fees for the previous year of ownership.

Anyways, if they are going to charge you for the time you’ve owned the boat, why can’t you say that you bought it used last week?
Obviously I could have just walked outta there, go to a different DMV and lie. Unfortunately, I believe in karma. Saving a few hundreds here may cost me more somewhere else? Who knows.

But I forgot to mention now that I've registered my "vessel", Alameda county Accessor's Office sends me a "vessel" tax bill based on their estimate of how much my "vessel" is worth. I can't remember if it's every year or two year? But the first time was ~$100. Last time was ~$20. Will have to pay this as long as I own this "vessel".

Love it Al!!! But I must say, California will always find away to take one's money in a hurry. Here in Texas I do not pay car registration fees due to my disabled veterans status.

CA has plenty of veteran benefits for both disabled and honorably discharged...    Property tax,, Free park admissions / camping, Calvet Loans,  just to name a few.
Texas boat registration for motorized kayaks doesn't sound much  easier,  many times  I've  had to provide MSO papers for customers and listened to plenty of  their complaints.
Our property taxes sure are a lot lower..      Not bashing Texas..   seriously been thinking about moving to Lee County area...

Did I miss something Texas does not pay State taxes. Maybe that’s one reason why ourtaxes are lower. Calif is one state that has the highest tax base. Not including New York. Check out the number of Veterans that are homeless. I just drove through Stockton. Check out the homeless there. Better yet check of our state Capital, or even San Fran. I’m sure you will find homeless veterans there. If there homeless I’m sure they can care less about free park admission and camping, probably might be sleeping in abandoned vehicles.

   Yeah,, you obviously did.

It sounds like you label all the homeless in our state as Veterans... and blame the State of California for their woes ?
With all the VA help and resources available,,, there's no reason to be sleeping on the streets, unable to take advantage of those resources,, except for substance abuse.   No reason they can't travel to another state and find work.. or cheaper housing ...

Getting back to the OP...       I've been using a Torqeedo motor since O9.    Never have registered it.   I  always paddle while passing thru the harbors...  makes it less conspicuous.

Hahahaha! My wife once got mismatched plates from DMV. She didn’t notice, just bolted them on and drove for several years. Plates were something like 1COW123 and 1COW124. One day one of her students came into her classroom and asked why she had different plates. Huh??!?!?  Tried to get either one matched, but DMV said the other pair had been turned in and couldn’t be reused. She still wanted COW plates (we both went to UC Davis) but they were past that in the current issue, so she got personalized ones NOW 1 COW. And no, they didn’t waive the plate replacement fee!
Warning! Retiree; Knows it all and has plenty of time to tell you about it.

That’s good to know…
