I appreciate all of you guys inputs. I’m doing an AI conversion on a 22 hobie outback and was wondering if anyone done the motor mount for it on the outback with an AI conversion?? Would like to know if doing the regular motor mount how everyone else does it in there AI or revo for 2.5 Suzuki will work?? Just not sure how the motor would sit, I just like to get the dimensions and stuff on what you did to make the motor sit best. I am not able to do it now as it’s getting custom work on it right now so not sure when I will get it back!! Just trying to stay ahead of the game and than you all again for your help .

James Tong!! Have a happy New Years and be safe and see you guys and gals out on the water!!

I can't help you with the motor mount, but I'm curious about your "AI conversion" of your Outback. Do you have AI amas or the smaller sidekicks? Do you use the small Hobie sail or something else?
Please don't spoil my day, I'm miles away...

I have the actual ama from the adventure island and the braces and stuff. Gonna do it on the right side only. I let you know how it goes with the install and stuff.

Crazyfisher converted his OB and have been CRAZY successful with it  :smt007.
Remember to buy/use both rear mounts as opposed to original AI to save yourself money.

Dont do your motor mount until I send you my pics.  Also, might be able to do it with just one sidekick.  I will send pic of my motor mount as soon as I am able.  Very easy peasy and can be detached easily.

Hey James,
If you're interested in alternative mounting method:  Mounting directly to the aka worked great for me.  It takes some minor fab skills but in the end is super simple & adjustable.
The mount is 1-1/2" x 4" x 1/8" wall extruded aluminum from Alan Steel in RWS.  Held on with 3 hose clamps.  The slots in the aluminum were milled but could be dremeled if you had the patience.
In reality, the hoseclamps provide more than enough strength as-is.  I planned the torque rod before I knew just how weak the Suzuki 2.5 was.  The torque rod is solid aluminum with ball joints meant for kicker motor steering.

Very cool design, but I'd be a concerned about the aluminum mounting brackets, as it looks like they would tend to concentrate a lot of force in a small area of the aka bar. It would be pretty easy (and possibly safer) to fabricate mounting brackets out of, say, 3/4 starboard plastic. They sometimes have scraps at Tap Plastic that can be gotten for super-cheap.

Lol. I’m not sure “a lot of force” and “Suzuki 2.5” belong in the same conversation.

I don’t know what the stock aka is made of but I’m using 1-1/4” schedule 40 rigid aluminum conduit.  No normal activity is going to bend or otherwise damage the akas.  They are likely the strongest part of the system.

Yeah maybe if a boat runs me over, but at that point I’d have bigger problems to deal with.

Not to be a downer but you're underestimating the power of a 2.x hp gas motor.

The Akas on the islands pivot to absorb the ocean conditions and it's not as simple as moving a kayak forward in FAC conditions.

And yes, my AI is motorized and one of the first ones after Rudy's conversion... putting in a guesstimate of over 5k+ hours.

That is pretty heavy-duty. Online, says 0.145" wall thickness which is more than the Hobie tubing. However, the older style Hobie akas are not uniform thickness which saves weight and puts more metal where it's needed (it's similar on the newer style too, but its not so obvious). I'd still be worried about the mounting points over the long-run, though.

Anyways, I'm curious as to where you got the aluminum conduit.

Do you plan on sailing the OAI, or just using the motor mount?
