How big is the hole, usually they are reparable, even braid lines…. :smt006
12-15" gash near the lead line. I'm too lazy and cold to tend to it in winter so two new ones on its way Thursday  :smt003

What type of throwing net should a novice start out with for pursuing herring?
6ft 3/8 mesh…

Does 6' mean diameter or radius?

Pretty sure that's radius.
May the fish be mighty and the seas be meek...

For casting from shore, 5-6ft (which represents the radius) is great. Although for those new to casting, a smaller net, like 3ft,  can be an easier start.
There’s a really good YT channel called ReelReports with fishing tips. I like their cast net videos. Here’s one of them:

I bought a 3 ft net and it's a joke...it's like throwing a little parachute party favor army guy...the lead weight on a net so small does not sink fast enough to trap any fish.  .02$

I have only done it from the pier at Ferry Point. Seems to me that it would be pretty difficult while sitting.

A few years ago my buddy and I were out in our outback and tandem i14 we able to get them from our kayaks at candlestick park. Last year some youtubers were out in Sausalito getting them so it's doable if the spawn is long and you know where to launch. You get less net snagging from the kayak for sure.
Now you're limited to two buckets so it's easier from shore.

Last year at Anza Fisherman's Point by Coyote point there was a guy on a kayak armed with the extendo-paint roller thing that was helping folks with their snagged nets.  Dude was a superhero.
I bet the smaller nets are better if casting from the kayak.
