Anyone try one of these Newport Vessels Kayak Series trolling motors? I was hoping to put it through the cassette like this:

If you have used this motor before, a review would be appreciated before I pull the trigger. Thanks.

I currently use a bixpy in the front seat of my Hobie oasis tandem, but if I had to do it again, I think I would buy something like the Newport vessels motor and mount it as shown in the video below. His method requires no drilling into the kayak, and it also allows you to use the mirage drive at the same time.

That is a snazzy setup. I like that it doesnt require much weight offset. Some some of the other motor clamps out there, they sit pretty far out and you need a significant counter weight which just adds to your total weight.

Is the kayak-version just a shorter shaft? Because you will probably end up cutting/shortening the shaft anyways (especially if using the cassette plug).
That video was cool. I made one to fit in the mirage drive, but I like the idea of having both motor & mirage drive available. Granted, it might be hard to pedal against the drag from the motor in the water…maybe make the mount swivel/kick up like he mentioned in the video. Then you can swivel it out of the water when using the mirage drive?

I have the 36lb unit. Used it at least 15 times since I bought it in May. Put it in my Feelfree Moken 12.5V2 sonar pod hole using an adapter from Yakgear. Works great. No need to deal with cutting the shaft. Using a 55Ah battery and it lasts me all day using it at max power to get where I'm going, then slow troll 5-6 hours, then max speed back to the launch. I have a PWM on order and will be installing that soon. Should more than double the battery life. Best investment I've made. I have bad knees so peddle yaks are a no go for me. Another plus , it's salt water ready and they offer great customer service. Their web site has tutorials on how to install it, even how to hook up the PWM.
