If you are not going to be a bunch of trips, on party boats.   Use rental rods for big stuff.  I used to go in 7 day trips.  Biggest outfit I own is a custom 60-80 rod and a Talica 12ii.  Have landed 100# yellowfin.  Biggest bluefin was a schoolie 35#.   I now do 3/4 day boats in San Diego.  I take the 60-80 just in case, but rarely use it.  If trolling, I use their gear, and most of those are 6/0 Senators.   They stop when a trolling hookup.   Most is 25-40# rig.  This year I landed 4 yellowfin to 30# on an Avet MXL-mc.  30# flouro to the hook.  Only bit off once.  Just follow the fish, and keep it straight out from the boat and you will doing.  Going over, coming under.  Admitted my Talica is a nice reel, and near $700 with a $350 pole.  My 30# rig is a Phoenix 804.  I normally use a Lexa 400, but accidentally left it home this year.  Love it for jigs and poppers and snipers.

Just seen this on BD and picked one up, Fathom 15ld2 for 205 on Amazon.  Last week missed an Amazon deal on the 25nld2. From the post at BD it’s looking like different models on sale at random.

Christmas in October……my toys are here.  I need to get crackin on the sticks for them.

Bushy, you can tell Senor Tuna you just sold three of their reels and deserve promo staff discount on that used gear.

That's insane!

They ended up hooking five fish, with the biggest one weighing in around 300 pounds and 80 inches long. Since they have to be under 73 to keep recreationally, the team jumped into shark-infested waters for a picture before releasing it (pictured above).

There's a freakin gaff in the fishes mouth  :nono:

Looks like the East Coast plastic navy is giving it a shot:

“You go tuna fishing [in] a canyon, you need a boat that’s going to go 100 miles,” Colombo explained. “This is available to a lower income bracket. There was a guy out here with a Jet Ski. I even believe kayakers are trying to target them — I don’t know how that would work out.”

Yes! The last line is classic:

Lamoureux plans to eat the tuna, with help from friends, and perhaps some wasabi.

Alright, order placed for Torque 25nld2 and 40nld2.  25 is going on a Seeker Lime Green CJBF75.

Need recommendations on a heavier blank for handling that 50-60lb class.  I’m more partial to composite rods, grew up fishing glass and some of these newer rods are straight up crowbars lol.   I have a feeling I’ll take an asswhooping unless I’m on the rail the whole time.

Hopefully I’ll get to join the party next year  :beer3

August 3-day tuna kill me and Allen S are signed up.  LOOOove to fish that shit with you!!

So I got a chance to meet Senor Tuna at the fisherman’s landing parking lot sale last weekend.  I was aiming to pick up a penn visx20 to finish up my tuna arsenal but they sold em out before I got my shot.

I was on the fence about the visx16 but Steve broke it down in terms of getting old and a reduced desire to spend hours at the rail with a reel that’s a pound heavier in weight.   Plus the schools of really large fish they were running into locally the last couple years seem to be trending toward slightly smaller fish with the chances of running into a tanker super cow getting smaller. Went with a 16 and think I’ll be good.

Let the games begin!

Now you just need to finish rebuilding your boat.  When we going?
