Today I bought a United Anglers Centaur 7'6" rod and a Makaira 16Sea with 600 yards of 100# spectra with 80# topshot.   :smt004

Probably a United Composites rod. I have a Viper that was custom made.

Oh shoot, you’re right, United Composites, not sure what I was thinking when I typed that.

No worries. If you need to borrow some equipment let me know. I have an Avet HX Raptor, Talica 16 and some other reels. I also have a Terez rail rod and an Okuma rail rod as well.

So what’s the consensus on 2-3 rigs that will get the job done on full-day to 3-day trips?

I got enough gear to work the 25lb class but need heavier setups.  I’m looking at a torque 25ld2 to cover 30-40lb work and a torque 40ld2 for 60-80lb.  I’ll have to borrow a 100lb rig.  Or is it more common to fish 25-30 and I should get a  torque 15ld2 and fathoms for sizes 25 and 40?

I was down in SD again on Friday.  Couldn’t really find any of the reels I was looking at to do size comparisons and ask questions at the shops I stopped in at. So I just bought more blanks lol.

On a three day trip it all depends on what your going to be doing.  Five rods would be in my quiver. 30,40,50,60,80! rods. The 30lb rod will be used the most for fly lined bait during the day and 40/50 rods would be sinker rigs, 60/80 for jigs.

Why not just troll a 65 lbs braid straight up without any top shot? If top shot is required, why not just use braid for it?

Shock absorber and invisibility

And you'll most likely get chewed off with the braid.

Ugly stick medium + Abu Garza Reel from China.   :smt007

Joking aside, it really depends what those trips are targeting but if they aren't going for big BFT, then you'll likely use the 30-40# setups the most.  I usually take 4-5 setups and only end up using 1 or 2 on most of the shorter trips.

On the 1.5-3 day trips that target BFT, I usually take 30, 40, 50 set-ups for bait, and an 80 set-up for jigs.  I used the boat kite gear until this year.  I bought a Penn VISXS50 and a Seeker OSP 4X (custom from Dreadnaught Rods).  Until last year, when I caught the 262 in my avatar on boat gear, I really only ever used the 3- and 40 set-ups.  30, 40, 50, 80, 100, and 150 rods are all Seeker.  Reels are Penn Torque 15XNLD2, Avet JX5/3, Avet JX Raptor, Avet HX Raptor, Penn VISXS20, and Penn VISXS50 respectively.

Thanks gentleman.  Sounds like the original plan of Torque 25 and 40 will be my first pickups.  We’ll discuss rods later  :smt003
