I've caught surfperch from the beach before, curious to try from the kayak.

thinking it may be even easier
better view of the troughs from the back side of the waves
easier to keep the bait where I want it
more challenging to keep the 'yak from getting caught in the surf

from the beach I typically catch some sand crabs, so maybe artificial or squid chunks from the kayak?

anyone have any luck or tips you care to share?
Thanks,
Brian.

i have done it a couple of times, perch are def in lots of places not just in the surf zone but catching them with a trout rod and light gear from just outside the breakers on a kayak is pretty fun. I just ran a gulp sandworm on a hi low. I'm sure you could catch them using pretty much anything.

fun lesson in managing 2 things at once in the kayak, casting and retrieving line and not getting hammered in the surf. More enjoyable than catching surfperch from the beach, you can actually feel them fight.

Mostly a winter thing if I got really bored in the winter and needed to catch some fish. would also drop pots/hoops for crab

I disagree with this statement.  :smt005

I use 10lb braid with 10lb mono leader . Throwing a carolina rig on a 9.5 ft steelhead rod with a 2000 series spinning rod. Great fight. You really dont have to get very wet. Most perch are right behind the very first breaker.

I am sure there are fly fisherman who would agree with this as well.

It seems like it would be way more enjoyable than it actually is. I've tried this a few times and unless you have a pedal kayak, you spend so much time trying to hold your position behind the breakers that you're constantly juggling paddle and rod. I had to constantly remind myself ... three casts and then reset your position otherwise you'd find yourself right in the snot if you waited much longer than that.

What i have been wanting to try is catching perch along some of the jetty rock walls in a kayak. Seen some nice perch pulled at shelter and bodega.

Try Shelter Cove! I think Eric’s been getting them as by-catch trolling for halibut and salmon. Maybe he can clarify, but I think they hit the same rig he uses for hali/salmon.
