Trolling in 60 feet of water, 45  feet deep as someone on the forums said to do to avoid jelly and it worked well, less than half the jelly than when I fished in 100 fow. Line starts moving so I start reeling and sure enough something is fighting. I remember the advice given to me, exhaust it, fight it for 10 minutes if you have to. So I am in no rush, this thing is running. I get it to the yak once and it is having none of it so dives again. Really letting it take its time. I get it to the boat again and I see it, good size, 15-20 lbs if I had to guess.

And then shes gone. No dramatic headshake, no jump, line just went loose. Nothing broke, no hooks bent, no broken leaders, just gone. I feel like bites like that are super rare so Im afraid I missed my only chance at kayak salmon!

I was able to catch a small ling cod shortly after and I think I had another salmon bite but it took my bait and escaped before I could pick up the rod. I spent an extra hour and a half over when I was planning to return. Losing a fish like that gets you motivated for another. Going to try again tomorrow but that was a rough one.

I was using a brined krippled anchovy and a flasher.

Great report. Glad the motivation is still there.  :smt001

I dont want to even try and count how many times i have fought a salmon and can actually feel the hook sliding out of its mouth. Braid is a wonderful thing.  :smt005

I think the ones that get away keep us coming back more than the ones we catch.

I feel you pain. Last month I hooked a 20 pound halibut (estimate). I pulled it right next to my kayak. But it was in almost a vertical position. I have a big net, but the fish was bigger than the net. I tried to net it 3 times without success. I then tried to gaff it, never gaffed a fish before. Tried 2 times, the last time caught my lure. And there went my 20 pounder. It was a heart broken moment.

Thanks for sharing your story  MyBoy.   We feel your "pain".  Sometimes we win and other times the fish win  :smt002

I was lake trout fishing, and hooked a biggish lake trout, probably 28"-30". When it was about 10 feet down it started shaking its head, and suddenly it raked its teeth across my 20 pound leader, which went ping-ping-ping-ping-ping! And then the fish was gone, taking my lure with it.  I catch a lot of lake trout, and lose plenty of them in the process, but for some reason I can vividly remember the feel of that fish's teeth raking across my leader.

Well, it happens.  Here is my latest adventure into missed net jobs... In this specific case, the bite was so hot I just got back into the action...  It aint always like that!   :smt044

This specific event was the third like it in the last two seasons leading me to throw massive blame on my net... its just too small for good kings.  When loletaEric says go BIG, don't F around... go BIG!!!
