Okay, maybe not OLD old, but I'm guessing quite a bit older than average for just now getting into it.

I don't have my own yak yet, but have taken a couple of guided rental trips and I'm already so into it. At 50 years of age, I wish I had given this a shot earlier, but better late than never. I'm hoping to pick up my first yak this year, and all the associated safety equipment.

I'm also a huge fan of online communities (and particularly old school message boards). I've ran my own message board for about 20 years now (a gaming-focused board) so I have a real soft spot for these types of communities. I even used the same SMF software for a good 7 or so years before recently switching to different software. This board is giving me cool flashbacks heh.

You are not old to start.  I started after 50 and enjoy it greatly with my wife.
Just do your research for your first kayak to avoid upgrading too soon.

Hey maethlin, welcome to NCKA! I have been fishing since a little after I could walk, but didn't start kayak fishing until I was over 60. I have been having a great time, and I bet you will too.

I have been on forums since around 1992, and have seen a lot of fights instigated by the keyboard warriors. This site is pretty tame compared to others I have been on, although I have been poked a few times, and I just ignore. Not worth the time to respond.

Welcome, from a 78 year young man who started at 62.   Yeah, I've had to make some adjustments over the years, such as not staying out longer than 4-5 hrs and doing really heavy lifting.  But it's more about staying in decent shape in the off-season and on the days during the season when I'm not on the water. I'm no fitness fanatic, but I stay active, in fact, it's hard for me not to be active.

It's always the right time to get into kayaking!

Paddled my first kayak in about 1994 after seeing some sea kayaks camping in AK.
I got into kayak fishing when I was about 26, and changed over to open deck kayaks in about 2000. I'm 51 now and am still into it.

Fuzzy Tom hit the nail on the head, the biggest thing for me as I've aged is "training" during the off season. The kayak gets heavier and heavier each passing year dangit!

Like they say, age is just a number. A couple of years ago a friend and I were coming in from fishing. A couple of kids anyone younger then me by 30 years  asked us how we did on the water. On that day we did quite well. One of them made the statement “ Impressed”  and asked how old we were. We just laughed. Older now I still enjoy being on the water chilling and enjoying life around me. The actual catching of catching fish is of little importance. It’s just going something I truly enjoy.

After reading Tom's story, I want to adjust my target age.

Able to kayak fishing, snowboarding, road biking until I am 80 years old....

We do not discriminate based on age, sex, national origin, or fishing ability. Well, maybe a little bit based on fishing ability…

Welcome!  I'm 58 and really just getting into ocean kayaking tho I've been on the bay quite awhile, and had numerous boats before that.  Gives us another good reason to stay in shape!
