I went to Shelter over the weekend, I got 4 bites, hookup 2 lost both. No, I am not blaming my gears, It was just excitement and combined with stupidity lost both. The last one that made me quit is got net mishap and one of the hooks got tangled in the net. Snaps when it took another run. Anyway, that's not why I'm posting. I'm looking for the Salmon Rod 8'6" ML. I'm eyeing the Shimano Clarus but I'm deterred because it's 2 pieces. Anybody can recommend similarly but 1 piece?

I brought my tiger rod out for the deep six but didnt get anything on it.

It was good seeing you this weekend. I stayed in the same area. I lucked out but lost both from net mishaps.

I've got a Lamiglass X80 BMC Pro Bouncer 8ft 1-piece with Line wt 10-25 and lure weight 1-6 oz, used it for mooching salmon successfully.  Going to try using it for trolling next on a 3-way rig and think it will do well.

I did well on the trooching which is my new favorite Salmon setup. I used a 6oz sliding sinker.

I gotta say I don't quite understand the desire for long (>8') salmon rods on a kayak. It seems to me that a shorter rod would be more advantageous when lifting the tip to net a fish. The way I'm visualizing it, the steeper angle needed to net a fish on a longer rod would put a lot of stress on the tip, causing more snaps and limiting the range of flex in your rod.

Can one of you longer rod dudes help me understand the appeal?
Thanks

When the fish comes at you or pops the clip off the rigger, The longer rod picks up way more line and helps you keep tension.  The arc length of a 9' rod versus a 7 foot rod allows you to pick up an additional .5 inches of line per degree of change in the rod. So if you lift that puppy up 45 degrees you'll pick up almost 2 extra feet of line- That can help you keep a fish pinned as it jumps, or when it pulls the line off the clip and introduces momentary slack it can help you pick it up that much faster.

That makes sense-thanks for the explanation. Still seems a little unwieldy for my personal tastes but I can see it now.

I thought 8ft was pretty big, but it did help while mooching for sure to have longer limber rod than my standard trevala's, which are 6.6-7ft.  I'm a little worried about using my Avet on it, the drag being my concern of accidental over tightening in the moment.  What reel do you guys like for trolling with?

I use my avet. Set the drag before fishing and don't touch it!

Ive noticed that some avets dont have a nice indent on the strike zone, on my sx it really clicks into strike and I never go beyond that spot so I dont have to worry about it too much when trolling. Just set it and dont touch it!

But I was trooching with an abu ambassador knockoff with a star drag and line guide and that thing worked awesome, as you dont need to muscle those babies in too hard.

Also on the longer rods, the tip of my 9' rod was only like 6' away from me when loaded up lol.

Im pretty sure Eric rocks some penns
