So I purchased one of those Nocqua 10 Ah batteries specifically marketed for fish finders.

Used it twice, it worked fine despite turning on/off randomly once or twice in the middle of the day. Definitely lighter than the sealed lead acid one I've been lugging around.

The charger keeps doing this weird flashing thing. Emailed Nocqua to ask how to know if it's charged or not, they said it's not supposed to flash - clearly a defective product. They offered to replace it (apparently even though charger is flashing, that means the actual battery has defective circuit board). Also, I'm responsible for shipping costs.   :smt011

I have had overall bad luck with FF batteries. What do people recommend? (I have heard of Chet - will contact him next).

I have a Nocqua and it has worked fine. Problem might be in the charger. When it is flashing pull the charger from the wall then re-plug and see if the charge light is a solid red. Occasionally after my battery is half charged and I plug it in to the charger it will read green as if it is fully charged. I then pull the charger from the wall and plug back in and the light changes to red until the battery is totally charged then green. I think the charger may fail to detect the low charge and responds to the juice still in the battery.

Don't know what happened to the text I sent. Try unplugging the charger from the wall and re-plugging to see if the flashing red changes to steady red. I have a Nocqua and it has worked fine but on occasion after use and I start to charge it it will show green light as if it is fully charged but isn't. I then unplug the charge unit from the wall and plug back in and the light changes to red till a full charge is obtained. Could be the charger, not battery that has a defect.

I have their newer charger that has four blue bars - it doesn't have a red/green light.

It's technically not supposed to flash at all. I've put it in/out several times, different plugs, etc. It flashes all the time and always reads 100% charged, even after 7-hours fishing.

Even though it's the charger that's flashing, Nocqua says the problem is with the actual battery. Not sure why, that's just what they say.

I'm going to use it for now, I guess, just charge it for "a while." (they say 3 hrs for a full charge). I have the Navionics app on my phone as a safety backup in case of fog. But it's just annoying to have expensive things partially broken straight out the box.

I accidently sent my nocqua charger through the wash and the customer rep sent a new one right away. I told her that a component had popped in the charger and that it no longer worked... which was technically true... I just needed to fill out a warranty claim on their website.

OK. Different charger than mine. It may be the battery then. Nocqua should know. I'm sure you are not the first with the problem. If the connections to battery and charger were not so unique to each device model maybe someone would have either batt or charger to let you trouble shoot with.

These LiFePO4 batteries are great:

They are not quite as light as lithium ion, but way lighter than SLA. I've had one forever, and it's fabulous.

Used free SLA's that NCKA members gave away from old UPS's for several years and bought a 10$ charger from Cabelas for them.  But the Dakota Lithium is a really nice battery, I can go two days on a 7ah with my older FF's, use a car charger that I bought from Amazon for 30$ that works great.  Should have gotten the 10ah, but have two 7ah's and can charge one while using the other if needed.

Plus they are less likely to catch fire. They also can also be completely discharged without damage.

And one other nice thing is that they don’t take long to charge.

I run Dakota Lithium after a few cheapo SLA's didn't cut it. I discharged one and thought it was toast, so my dumbass bought another one. Totally happy with both, going on freshwater season 2 with no issues. Runs my Garmin Striker for about 20+ hours of fishing before I need to recharge, and can fully charge quickly. Both batteries lasted me an entire 4day, 3-night camp and fish without recharging.
