I have noticed that the salmon flesh here in the monterey bay is a lot lighter in color this year. I am guessing they have not fed on krill much and maybe more bait fish than previous years.

I have seen reports farther up North where the flesh color is more red.

They still taste great but really prefer the krill fed salmon.  :smt007

Those of us not eating any salmon envy any salmon eating  :smt044  Interesting though that they might taste different with changes to diet.  I figured from the topic that you were going ON a salmon diet (to rub it in to us non-catchers).

All that wind and upwelling is producing some BRIGHT salmon up here, my hen was so vibrant I might eat some raw, Eric had some fillets that are a little pale but its not as pale as a river salmon that is turning or anything.

Definitely a first world problem, but I got incredibly lucky and caught 2 salmon within 15 minutes of each other. The bigger one was dark red while the (slightly) smaller one was pale orange. Then about a week later, I caught one in the same place, and it was orange, but not quite as faded as the previous. That third one had the most fat and was easily the tastiest of the 3. They were all boys, btw. The picture is of the first 2.

Odd, that looks more like trout meat to me now that you showed the color of it.  I just don't know if I can really judge it without a taste test though  :smt003

Interesting side by side. Were both of those wild?

Yes, I believe so.

I'd think that the color would depend on diet, but it's hard to believe that those 2 would have had dramatically different diets.
