Hi,

I know the Penn Jigmaster 500 has been recommended as a solid kayak reel.

Are there other models in the Penn line up that have the bushings versus bearings similar to the 500 design?

Thanks
Curtis

Yes a ton of them. All the old ones.  My other favorite for inshore fishing is the 146 aka squidder.

My Jigmaster is jealous lately because this year I've been rolling slightly lighter with these two vintage Penn 85 Seaboys.  I've caught countless fish over the last seven years or so using ancient Penn 85s. You have to keep an eye on the screw that holds down the reel handle because it can get a little loose over the course of the day. If you have a metal spool, a Penn 85 is really fun for shallower water. If you have an old plastic/Bakelite spool, it won't handle deep water with heavy weights and big fish...learned that the hard way.

Squidders have spool bearings. Surfmasters have the bushings. The surfmaster 100 is the narrow version. I usually fish a jigmaster 501,and a surf master 100. Super easy to rebuild and maintain. They have upgraded stainless steel, and aluminum parts, and greased dragwashers. I don't take new fancy reels on beach launches. If you google Alan Tani, he has an amazing website about every reel ever made, and how to make the most out of them.

Here are a few of mine that get plenty of use. The 3 with the chrome are all 2 hand reels that I acquired in the 80's. They have Newell frames, and aluminum spools. They also have fine threaded stainless steel gear sleeves and dogs. And of course greased drag washers. The redish colored one is a narrowed jigmaster. 4:1 gear ratio. My goto salmon reel.  The next is a narrowed 259. It is 3:1 gear ratio.I like to use this one bottomfishing. The lower ratio helps get bigger fish up and away from danger. The smallest is a narrowed surfmaster. Surfmasters are 3:1 also. I use it as my all around 15-20# setup. These reels have been threw hell. They just keep going and going.
