How about doing a clinic on Halibut kayak fishing 

The lings eluded me, but I had fun catching and releasing 3 cabs and 4-5 small rockfish before catching dinner, a 22" black.

It was nice meeting everyone and seeing a few familiar faces.  And thanks, Steve, for the help up the stairs with my kayak.

Btw, the pic somehow doesn't do the day justice...  it was a spectacular day...  Just a beautiful day to be out on the water.

Butts, targeted or incidental/accidental?

I don't know about the rest of the guys but when I'm fishing the Bean I throw down bait/lures and hope for the best.  When we're drifting the rocks you expect to catch a ling, cab or rockfish.  However, looking for sandy areas and drifting for butts sometimes is like walking through the desert looking for water. 

Case in point, the two butts I caught yesterday (only one was a small keeper) was when I drifted off the reef and wanted to kick back a little.  Last time I was at BH and Eric was right next to me I caught a big ling and he catches a big butt.  Bottom line is, the beauty of fishing places like BH is that its full of good sized fish and you never know when or what you'll hook up with even if you're in the middle of nowhere.

Mooch, I never thought I would say this but I did miss your screaming...LOL.

wow, so 5 halibut hooked for the day and 4 landed? pretty amazing.

Excellent conditions,  sounds like one of those rare days on the coast.  Thanks for the pictures.  cafecraig and eyeatbay, you guys are putting a hurt on the halibut consistently!  Way to go!

Ben, hey I have never caught a salmon from a yak before, despite my hours and hours of trying...  Maybe that evens the score!?

Mooch, the best thing I could contrbute to a hali clinic is "buy a really big net."

Feel free to use that without my permission -- just wanna give back y'know.  

Gary yeah, I have spent like 10 hours in the last 12 months targeting halibut, but only got 1 of 4 that way.  Other 3 were just "accidents."  You're right about BH - great place for pot luck!

I think it's the all the rocks and patches of sand all over the place. At least that's what I see when I'm drifting and trooching the area. I was lucky enough to catch one halibut at the hollow "dragging" one Bill's home-made curly tails.

Gary, I'm surprised you didn't hear my scream when I caught my stripers at Lake Mendocino 

My hali advice is to get a good gaff.  I used mine for the first time yesterday and it worked great.  Netting a hali from a yak with a net just barely big enough to get around the body is a recipe for disaster.  The butt will go ballistic, break whatever is in its path, do a death roll and spit the hook in your face.  

Craig, sorry we didn't wait for you when we did our group carnage picture, your hali (notice I didn't say butt) would have given the pic an exclamation point.  Ron has a copy of the pic but its too big for the NCKA server.  We have to figure a way to resize it for posting.  Actually it was a good thing we didn't take more pics, we were tired of hoisting these big ass fish especially the stringer that Paul (Nomad) and Eric (Eyeatbay) had.

You know the areas up and down the coast look really fishy too.  Eric B had a suggestion to target them...Eric, please chime in with your excellent idea.

Mooch, you would have been screaming at a whole new different pitch if you bagged one of the monster hali's.

Thanks for the hook up guys. And Gary, thank you for the pointers on drifting.  Those pinnacles just come and go w/in 6 seconds time frame.  Once I get my rod ready for drop; the structures were gone.

I tried to upload the pics last night but each pic is saved in heavy pixel and I was getting error messages from NKCA website.  I am sending them to Gary now...

Erik, Paul & Gary---you guys are great getting those humongous fish.  BH is so close to my house; i'll be back to know the area well until the ghost chase me away.

Craig - It is funny that you mentioned that your halibut hit as you were done with your drift and reeling in.  Both mine and Eric's were caught in the exact same manner!  Might be something to that...keep alot of action on the lure?
