San Simeon Tourney 8/18

Had a great day on the water.  Launched at 7 out SS cove with about 20 other yakkers.  we headed out around the point.  pretty big swell and the wind picked up about 9 9:30 but the fishing was great.  There were A ton of reds caught out there.  I was in 40 55 Fow the whole time.  Caught a lot of gophers, sugar bass, and blues, 1 underling and three good size reds with the biggest being 5lbs 2 oz and the other two over 4.5 lbs.  all the reds on a 3oz head with 7" swimbait. I really wanted Lings Cause Iknew a legal one could easily take the pot.  One of our Own "Cos" took the Pot of $400 with a nice toad of a ling.  I'll let him post his own story.  I'm pissed I forgot my camera so no OTW shots but Cos did get one of me so maybe he'll post it later.  Also met up with Ethan and his dad Gary.  It was good to see you guy's again, And a pleasure to fish with you.  Had a great time. Next year if any of you want to make the roady this Tournament could be so much bigger.  it was 20 to enter winner take all for heaviest fish, but the director was open to a second and third place and different judging next year if we can get more people($)  had a great time out there.  i got a couple lame cooler pics but the fish aren't too bad.     there is a third one hiding under the other two and the latter is the biggest of three reds 20" 5 Lbs 2 Oz.

Well....we didn't end up with much.  My father-in-law had a mid-size blue and a kelp bass.  I had a small gopher but nothing to brag about.  Thanks Andrew for showing us the ropes today.  I owe you some lead!  Good day fishing overall.  Weather was nice but the swells were rather large.

Almost didn't go because of the weather forecast (lame)! Too much coffee before the launch and I ended up doing a full punch through on the way out. Great start?! Got to the spot 45 minutes later and got my gear in. Started out with dead squid and got my index finger stuck in a circle hook. Not punctured, but trapped, and it was close to being ugly. Took me a couple minutes to carefully get out of that, no harm done. Switched to the white 4oz white 7" swimbait after that. Found a hole in the kelp plugged with blues and liked the way it looked so I worked it and on a retrieve I got some dead weight on the way up and thought it was kelp, but played it like a fish. Saw a big head and finessed it to the top. I new I didn't have a good hookset so I casually grabbed my net. As soon as I got it in my hand a felt my jig get spit. I looked down and my fish was in full suspension. A nice calm scoop job finished with some hoots and a nice clubbing.  LUCKY  No headshakes till it was in the net.  Then ballistic. Fun group and lots of nice reds. I caught 0 reds once again, but I'm ok with that. Fish ended up at about 12.5lbs. ended up with $440! Good to meet Andy and a couple other new faces. Cos

Yes, there are campgrounds a mile or two from San Simeon Cove but I'm not sure of the name.  It might be San Simeon State Park.

San Simeon is about 3 hours from San Jose, down highway 101 to Paso Robles.  Take Highway 46 over the hills towards the coast.  Right on Highway 1.  You'll hit the town of Cambria.  San Simeon is just a few miles north of Cambria.

Dogpound. Good to meet you and thanks for letting us tag along for some fishing talk. You might not have taken the pot for the biggest fish but you sure did eat good. We'll get'em next year. I'll be down for labor day weekend. If your going out sure would like to hook up with you again.

that's a helluva drive, and the weather can be spotty.  If your down to go sometime, lemme tag along!!  Would love to hit that spot.
